Since the final sentencing is over I have to make something very clear…if you do any organizing locally I would suggest not working with someone named Emily Terry - this is not a reactive callout post because I don’t like someone’s attitude or anything like that. They are a bad acting local opportunist who immediately threw Black activists under the bus to the federal government. I saw the majority of MJ’s sentencing before mine and his words will likely haunt me for the next five years of his incarceration and motivate me for the rest of my life. Because of a few people’s inability to stand behind their supposed politics, he will be a vital part missing from service to marginalized communities in Little Rock. I watched him stand before the judge poignantly arguing his right to protest for Black lives in the historic Little Rock Nine courtroom to then have his rights stripped away systematically. His structured and nuanced sentiments be condensed to “terroristic violence.” Over the last three years, my codefendants and I had worked with a prosecutor who seemed unopposed to granting us probation upon sentencing, but only in the last couple of months a new prosecutor assumed the role in our case and made it clear by last week that he intended to pursue federal prison time to make an example of us. So by the end of January we will be turning ourselves in for an 18 month sentence, following that we will owe $35k to various police departments in central Arkansas who claim to be OUR victims. As I say this I want you to remember these names and their grieving families: Bradley Blackshire, Eugene Ellison, Terence Caffey, Bobby Moore, Charles Smith Jr., Deon Williams, Roy Lee Richards Jr., Keivion Jones, Brendon Johnson, Chavis Carter…the list goes on when it comes to police killings of Black men and teenagers in Arkansas. I want friends in Arkansas to remember what’s important - not how you’re seen or proving yourself as a white “ally,” not the petty differences in politics or anarchy vs. “tankies,” not stupid little interpersonal beef, but honing in on the essence of protecting each other and internally developing your beliefs and acting accordingly based on them. There is so much power in extending your hand, finding the balance between self-preservation and the preservation of a resistant community. I will never forget the people that showed up yesterday and it pushes me to show up too. I hope that the past three years in this case and what has happened to all involved will end up meaning something more than the heartache. I know that our actions resulted in no real material change, but god I hope it can mean something. thotiana tankikova @_unpeachy that’s me. 3 of us got 18 mo in federal prison, and one, a Black community leader & activist, got 5.5 years. We’re all first-time offenders. Promised probation by prosecutors who rescinded at the last second. Attorney confirmed they’re trying to make an example out of us. Attorney said our charge would have been state-level vandalism if it weren’t political. instead they hit us with a whole slew of federal charges, including violent crimes: arson, conspiracy, possession, etc. what we did was pure property damage that posed no threat to human life
