It is definitely text heavy. Perhaps looking at the old pokemon games could help? I remember them having a nice balance.

One of my teachers recommended this game to the whole class as homework. Never got arount to finishing it but it's a very good game.

It shows the importance of bark buttons. /j

Trust your gut. Take the coore of what you want to make, scale down, and stay focused. Game jam's are there to push yourself, but they are also there to learn through lessons. Over scoping is harsh, but you'll get past it.
