📽️ At X-FELs, scientists capture the motions of samples in snapshots that can be strung together into "molecular movies". Thus, X-FELs are a bit like super magnifying microscopes combined with a camera - really great tools. There are only a handful of such X-FELs in the world!

⚡The photos were taken on a research trip: Andrea and Patrick were in the US conducting experiments at the "SLAC X-FEL" together with an international team from the USA, United Kingdom and Sweden.

SLAC stands for Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, X-FEL means X-ray free electron laser.

The #UniSysCat team of Dr. Patrick Scheerer and Dr. Andrea Schmidt focuses on understanding how signal transduction of membrane proteins works and how certain enzymes function. To do this, they analyze the structure of these molecules using X-rays.

🔎 What are the researchers in the #UniSysCat group of Dr. Patrick Scheerer and Dr. Andrea Schmidt from #Charité doing?

🧑Scientists from Berlin's University of Medicine in a catalysis research cluster? Yes, of course, they are studying structure and function of proteins and enzymes (biocatalysts).

🦠 Researchers in Ingo Zebger's group at @tuberlin.bsky.social for example study hydrogenase, an enzyme that can split and reassemble #hydrogen gas. Its ability makes it promising for #energy storage in hydrogen-based systems like fuel cells and electrolysers.

Spectroscopists can measure the tiny movements of a molecule, which no human eye can see, using special instruments. And from these measurements, they can draw conclusions about the structure and function of the molecule. These kind of measurements using light are called vibrational #spectroscopy.
September 10, 2025 at 10:37 AM
💡How does #spectroscopy work?

Molecules like enzymes react to light. For example, they start to move: Light provides the energy needed to cause parts of a molecule vibrate, just as we humans can get energized by eating a piece of glucose and then go out and do sports!

🔎 What is the #UniSysCat group of Dr. Ingo Zebger doing?

⚡They work with light! Ingo Zebger heads the research group “Spectroscopic characterization of metalloproteins” at @tuberlin.bsky.social. They use light to study how enzymes function, the natural catalysts in our body and other organisms.

💧Where does the #hydrogen for a fuel cell come from? Green hydrogen can be obtained by #electrolysis: using electricity from renewable energy sources, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen in an electrolyzer. The photo shows an electrolyzer used to test different catalysts for water splitting.

This photo from the Strasser lab @tuberlin.bsky.social shows an experimental setup by which fuel cells can be tested. A fuel cell is an #energy converter: it converts chemical energy into electrical energy, often using hydrogen as the carrier of the chemical energy.

⚡Sven Brückner, Pierre Schröer and Carla Coll are preparing samples for UV/Vis spectroscopy. By shining laser light on a sample and measuring its response, they can draw conclusions about the properties and behavior of molecules in the sample, as well as the exact course of chemical reactions.

🔎What is the #UniSysCat group of Prof. Peter Strasser researching?

🧪An age without fossil carbon? That’s the dream of Strasser’s group "Electrochemical Catalysis, Energy and Materials Sciences" at @tuberlin.bsky.social. They study catalysts for clean energy storage and conversion technologies.

☀️ The team also develops photocatalytic processes to split water or remove contaminants in order to provide green #hydrogen or purified water. Photocatalysts are activated by light. Researchers are searching for and developing new catalysts that are abundant, cheap, and are activated by sunlight.

🎛️ One of the team's tasks is to test new catalysts and find ideal conditions for their use - often a laborious and complex process. To speed that up, the team uses "parallel reactors", as seen in the photo. These enable a simultaneous testing of catalysts at different reaction conditions. #catalysis
