is there anything more satisfying than a really good spreadsheet? survey says no

(friendsgiving this year is happening a month early because it's doubling as a going away party for a friend who is moving. stay tuned for food pics this weekend)
a screenshot of a spreadsheet labeled "friendsgiving (observed) 2025". this is the menu survey tab. the first column is "proposed menu item" and it includes roast chicken, hot spiced apple cider, sour cream and chive rolls, green bean casserole, etc. the next two columns are for me (further columns, truncated from this spreadsheet, are for each guest), and one says "interest in eating?" and the next says "interest in making?" the "eating" column has a drop down of options labeled "definitely want", "willing to eat", and "no interest", and these options are color-coded green, yellow, and gray respectively. the "interest in making?" column can be left blank, but otherwise has a drop down of "willing to make" and "want to make". not pictured: there's a score column at the end that averages the "eating" column so we can prioritize the menu. you can see that some items are crossed out. a gantt chart for preparing friendsgiving for seven people. the columns are menu items and the rows are time slots (Weds, Thurs, Fri, and then 30-min blocks on Sat, from 11A - 5:30P). each column header is color-coded by person responsible (there is a key). the cells are color-coded based on whether the oven is involved or not, and if it goes in the oven on the day of the meal, the cell has the oven temp and timing.

I'm not even a big art guy but when I went into the musee de l'orangerie in Paris that has the big oval room with multiple huge monet panoramas of weeping willows and water lilies I literally had to sit down

my bedroom! a queen sized-bed with two green and gold throw pillows, a white bedspread, big fluffy emerald green blanket draped across part of it, and three visible windows with sheer curtains. you can see a soft gray rug over hardwood floors, a ceiling fan, a wall of photos, and a ceiling fan. the walls are off-white. dining room! this space has hardwood floors, a gray rug with diamond pattern, a solid wood table with extendable leaves, four wooden chairs with dark blue cushions, and an electric keyboard in the background. you can see the stairs up to the upper level with a nice wooden banister, and the hallway into the kitchen (I've changed those tiles since this picture was taken). on the wall with the stairs are some wands, a couple frames drawings, and a copy of the marauder's map; this room is on the redecorating list for those reasons living room! this space has a beautiful area rug with blue, green, and beige swirls over hardwood, a large squashy gray sectional couch with lots of colorful throw pillows and blankets, a blue padded armchair with matching ottoman, a brass and glass hexagonal coffee table (and matching end table), and a gallery wall with lots of colorful art. walls are off-white and a nice big window is visible, partially obscured with a blind. there are two plants in this pic, one sad one in the middle of the coffee table, and one considerably happier pink princess philodendron in the foreground, on the mantle of the fireplace the newest room in the house, the office/guest room! this room has bright teal walls, hardwood floors and, a rug that's an abstract mix of teal and orange/red. on one wall you can see a reeded glass cabinet full of folded fabric, underneath which there is a cot (stored upright with a cover); then a large double-hung window, then a black standing cabinet. the other wall has a mini-split AC unit, a leg board with craft supplies, a table with a sewing machine and a serger, and an office chair pushed into said table.

in summary, there are plenty of things you can do to try to *optimize* your houseplants if you get invested in them, but if you just want something alive to make your place feel nicer, I promise you that's achievable 🌿

p.s. plant tax! (one of these plants is dead now, just to prove my point)
a thriving spider plant in a blue self-watering pot, hanging in a skylight. she makes so many pups we literally can't give them away a swedish ivy sprawls out of a pot on the end of a mantle which is decorated with several candles. there's a bit of light coming in from the side of the mantle the swedish ivy is on, which happens to be east-facing (though the window is not visible in this picture) a peacock plant in a pot on the ground, vibrant and happy despite slightly crispy leaf tips (if I kept the house humid enough to fix that I would have mold issues). this is a finicky plant that I would not recommend for beginners, but being a few feet from a west-facing window and getting distilled water have been enough to keep this one going for now *knocks wood* a Hoya plant hanging in a skylight and climbing up the rope towards the beam she's hanging from. the leaves are variegated light green in the middle and glimpses of pink are visible (many of them turn Very pink in the summer, it's delightful). it's a good thing she's happy in this pot because I don't think it's possible to get her down to repot her at this point 😂

emoji kitchen is my favorite Google feature in decades and if they ever take it away I *will* cry. it's embedded in gboard, but if you're on desktop/don't have an android, you can use it by googling "emoji kitchen"!
an emoji of an orange and white clownfish, created by combining "clown" and "fish" in emoji kitchen an emoji of a yellow gumdrop-shaped (blob) person with round eyes holding up a smartphone in both of their hands, covering their mouth. the phone is about a quarter of the size of the entire emoji; the overall effect is very cute a deeply cursed emoji of a yellow face, smiling (?) toothlessly, its eyes replaced by hockey pucks and eyebrows by hockey sticks (with the blades pointing up, as if this is something eyebrows do???). it's also blushing, for reasons unknown. I love using this horrifying emoji to torture my friends. an emoji of a family of rabbits: two large rabbits and a dozen baby rabbits, with three floating hearts mixed in. you can make emojis of several animal families in emoji kitchen by combining an animal emoji with itself (suggesting reproduction); for rabbits, the artists made a joke about their high reproduction rates by adding in a dozen babies rather than the standard one.

I ✨love✨ this emoji and it's also important to note that using it in Google's Emoji Kitchen (which is not AI!) brings the blobs back, for example:

a spreadsheet showing the steps, timings, and oven temperatures for each ingredient in a thanksgiving menu: pie, rolls, green beans, ham, potatoes, and cider. the spreadsheet has color coding to highlight when each dish is in the oven. the times are half-hour blocks from 9a-4p, with prep steps for the pie and rolls on Monday and Wednesday rows as well.
