Last weekend our students Ari Kaye, Joseph Meyer, Hunter Clark, and Dylan Mendoza presented their research at the annual Colorado Space Grant Science Symposium. All did a great and Meyer won Best Research Poster; the UNC Department of Physics and Astronomy has now won that 8 of the last 11 years!

UNC Physics was well represented at the recent APS Global Physics Summit. Professors Galovich, Semak, and Engstrom, and new Postdoc Dr. Troy Singletary, attended. Dr. Engstrom gave a talk on “Prestress-induced odd elasticity”.

With the costs of textbooks constantly going up, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the university, has been looking at ways to lower book costs for student by converting our large, introductory physics and astro classes to Open Educational Resources (OER), in other words free textbooks.

With the costs of textbooks constantly going up, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the university, has been looking at ways to lower book costs for student by converting our large, introductory physics and astro classes to Open Educational Resources (OER), in other words free textbooks.
We'd like to congratulate our faculty member, Dr. Tyler Engstrom (top row, 2nd from left) on being named one of this year's Cottrell Scholars!
RCSA has named 16 early career teacher-scholars in chemistry, physics, and astronomy as recipients of its 2025 #CottrellScholar Awards. Each awardee receives $120,000. Congratulations to this distinguished class!
