It takes decades for newly planted trees to perform ecologically at the same level as mature trees. Yes, they can be replanted, but it's not that simple.

I understand where you're coming from, but I think it's a false dichotomy.

If we're talking clearing young, scrubby and invasive trees from previously developed land, I agree, but removing mature trees when avoidable is just shooting ourselves in the foot.

We have to have both. I believe it's possible to preserve tree canopy and redevelop underutilized property. If we get rid of trees, the neighborhoods we build, whether affordable or not, won't be resilient in the face of rampant climate disruption. We have to find a way for both/and, not either/or.

I remember when they did this in Knoxville. It made downtown SO much better. I suspect it played a role in the revitalization of downtown because it made getting around easier.
