How do you feel about becoming a political lightning rod? People occasionally just flip mel off or whatever, but nobody's come up to me and tried to make a statement about anything. Personally, it's kind of dumb. It's just a vehicle. So it's ironic that it would even become a political statement, but nonetheless it is. [Editor's note: Taylor was arrested and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. He was later pardoned by President Trump.]

In many ways, this had to hurt. In an embarrassing incident Saturday, a 40-year-old man became stuck in a tube slide at an elementary school playground in Vernon, Conn., and was freed only after firefighters took the slide apart, authorities said. The man was "wedged feet and head first" in the middle section of the slide in "extreme discomfort," the Vernon Fire Department wrote on Facebook. The man refused treatment and transport to a local emergency room, authorities said. With admirable restraint, the fire department described the rescue as "a unique call for service." "His wife was asking 'Oh, is the news going to know about this?'" Babcock said. "And here we are.

And every racial group has a seen a similar percentage increase in real median household income in the past 50 years. White household earnings increased from about $55k in 1975 to $75k in 2020. Black households went from ~$32k to $46k. (8/n)

Looking at individual-level metrics, again there is little evidence that gains for non-White people have come at the expense of White people. The White unemployment rate is currently near all-time lows (3.6% in June). (7/n)

Also important to note that the population as a whole is becoming more diverse. The 45-64 age group is 62.9% white. 65-84 year olds are 74.3% White. But 18-24 year olds are just 50.5% White and 25-34 year olds are 52.7% White. (5/n)

Since 2020, Pizzaballa has been the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, a crucial role in advocating for the Christian minority in the Holy Land. After Hamas's attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, Pizzaballa offered himself as a hostage in exchange for children who were being held by Hamas in Gaza. He visited Gaza in May 2024 after months of negotiations. He would be expected to continue some aspects of Francis's leadership of the church, but has made few public statements on controversial issues.

So he’s reducing tariffs on most countries but raising them on our two biggest trading partners? This could actually be worse than the policy it replaces.
In a strange turn of events, the president seems to have added another 10 percent tariff to Canada and Mexico. Asked earlier if the 10 percent tariff extended to those countries, Scott Bessent, the treasury secretary, said that it did. And a White House official clarified for me just now that that was the case. Previously, Canada and Mexico had been exempted from this round of "reciprocal" tariffs, though they still faced a 25 percent tariff on many of their goods that the president imposed last month.
