Huge thing is that most of the time people don't know!

Also this taxonomy is good baseline for understanding police, and in particularly the difference between armed police (swat) and stability police (riot cops)
"Perito and Bayley ... also distinguish six types of police officers: uniformed general, non-uniformed criminal investigators, stability police, armed units, covert intelligence agents, and border police."

Even going in *with* the armed police but retaining lead would be better, I think

and iirc a lot of the unarmed community response type outfits usually end up calling the cops as backup for a lot of their calls, which i don't think is actually the worst way to handle things, but you want those trained in de-escalation to retain overall control imo

do think an important chain in this is about who is incident commander when you have multiple agencies responding to the same incident, which should ideally be your unarmed/de-escalation type responder even if they are armed patrol/armed response on scene

even

[incident] ←→ [unarmed responder] ←→ [armed responder]

is better than the current status quo, but i think reformed policing looks more like that than people without guns

OP is right we should aim to break up police, but i do not think most of public safety is gonna be unarmed in america any time soon. however is it is important to have unarmed elements, but they're almost certainly going to be in the minority
