People were arguing in my mentions today about whether the Earth is "round" when it's technically an irregular oblate spheroid and look "round" doesn't mean "absolutely perfect sphere" it means round. A soccer ball is round, a cantaloupe is round, a fluffy borb in winter is round, just go with it.

With all the criticisms of AI one I don't see as often is how it's the final form of the tech industry's 20+ year push to take computers and internet from "useful tool you can use in a vast variety of ways" to "thing that does everything for you and gives you as few options as possible for doing so"

I cannot emphasize enough how true & real this is.
In almost anywhere on the political spectrum you ID with or major issue, there’s probably a bot/troll operation to encourage your rage and vitriol.
And how/where that rage gets directed, esp understandable rage, is what they are out to influence.

People on this app get really angry every time I point out that social media manipulation is a real phenomenon that we are all stewing in and that’s having real world consequences and I’m sure part of that is engagement farmers who do that manipulation not liking people talking about it

We really need to sort capitalizing on epistemic threats & ontological shocks. Um... because our society says that poor people should die from easily curable diseases, in pain, alone, and homeless? And the way we've told kids to "not be poor" is to get a good job? And to get a good job you need a college degree and good grades?
