Form and function: Halle’s dress is designed to cut Adrian Brody’s hands to shreds if he tries to grope her again this year.

Thread. CW: suicide.

On this Transgender Day of Remembrance, I'm thinking about Leelah Alcorn, a 17-year-old #transgender girl who committed suicide in 2014 after her religious parents denied her transition treatment, forced conversion therapy on her, and isolated her socially.

I’m not at this place yet, but I know it’s the only place to go.

The only successful Halloween costume of my adult life was my Count Orlok from NOSFERATU a few Halloweens ago. (I sacrificed my beard for this costume: the head, fortunately, was undead-ready, and the sickly-pale complexion only needed a little enhancement.)

Kids, I held out as long as I could, but I just can't watch the debate. The only response I want to hear to anything J.D. Vance says is this, and Tim is far too nice:

Hey, I’m an elder! For which I have to thank @tomandlorenzo.bsky.social, my coolest followers on the other place, and we’re kind enough to give me an invite so I could follow them the hell out of there.

Inappropriate? My dad tended to take my brother and me to movies he wanted to see, with little regard to ratings. For this one, my brother was 13. I was 7.

As far as favorite mugs, I didn't really have one until my wife got me this. (She gets me.)

My wife just suggested they do the DNC state roll call thing like Wakanda does: “Arkansas…will NOT challenge today.”
August 21, 2024 at 12:08 AM
I'm here in Chicago with the DNC, but I grew up in New England, so maybe folks will understand what I mean when I say I feel like I'm watching the 2004 Red Sox make their run. Nervous they're gonna blow it somehow, because they always do, but just daring to believe this might be the year...

Also, Democrats unashamedly espousing actual progressive values, instead of cringingly courting Trump voters who would never come back even if we wanted them? I'm so confused...

I'm not a person particularly suited to banner waving, but I feel like, in the 30 days Harris has been the candidate, Democrats have somehow figured out a unity of mission and messaging that has been missing in every campaign in my lifetime. It makes me nervous, but also—what's that word?— hopeful?

Can't wait to dive into this. I first discovered @willowcatelyn.bsky.social's insights 6 years ago, when prepping a podcast on SLEEPAWAY CAMP. She's been an essential film voice ever since for me. Congrats to her & @cadenmgardner.bsky.social on what I'm sure is a new addition to the critical canon.

Sticker graffito by my bus stop, in which the artist answers a question I think all makers need to ask themselves.

On this Eclipse Day, a reminder that A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT is a much darker story than you may remember. The Yankee becomes a dictator, and when the populace resists he uses his modern knowledge of armaments and electricity to joyfully slaughter tens of thousands of people.

Anyone else remember the remake of DOA (1988), in which the murderer is a pathetic wannabe writer who tries to steal someone else's manuscript and pass it off as his own? At the end, Dennis Quaid just laughs at him.
