I wonder if the overwhelming preponderance of internet trolling has dulled people’s sense of shame. People would get trolled or shamed for anything and everything they’d say, regardless of whether it was stupid, so it makes no difference anymore whether it’s stupid.

It's ressentiment. They'll gladly accept further misery for themselves so long as everyone else gets to be just as miserable, if not more so.

The question, as always with fascism, is how many people they'll take with them as they go down. In this way, it's remarkably like a virus: self-limiting, but not without destroying whatever is in its path.
