On Memorial Day 1937, peaceful protesters marched for steelworker rights outside of Republic Steel Plant on the Southeast side of Chicago. They were brutally attacked by police officers with weapons obtained by the plant's owners. 🧵

Federal statistics on workplace fatalities show that on average worker deaths have greatly decreased since the passing of the OSH Act, from about 38 worker deaths a day in 1970 to about 15 worker deaths a day in 2023.

This disaster spurred new fire safety laws and codes in New York City. The Sullivan-Hoey Fire Prevention law established the nation’s first Fire Prevention Bureau, expanded the powers of the fire commissioner, and required sprinkler systems and safe exit routes in every building.

Many factors contributed to the high death toll, including ineffective fire escapes, lack of irrigation system, blocked exit routes caused by employers locking doors, and inadequate FDNY rescue equipment to reach high floors.

On March 25, 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in NYC became one of the deadliest industrial disasters in the U.S. after 146 garment workers, mostly young immigrant women, were killed. Public outrage galvanized the labor movement already in progress before the tragedy.🧵

Several worker centers in Illinois are asking the public to submit witness slips for two pieces of state legislation that they say are critical for worker protection.

A construction worker was killed by electrical shock in North Lawndale Tuesday morning after the boom lift he was working on came into contact with a high-voltage power line. The 33-year-old was transported to Stroger Hospital and pronounced dead. ⬇️
