We are very excited to announce that our colleague Dr. Savina Sirik received Vetenskapsrådet (Swedish Research Council) research grant for her project titled: “Navigating Complexity: Intergenerational Memories of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia”!

Dr. Ivo Plsek participated in the “Japan: Pre-modern, Modern and Contemporary, 2025” conference at ASE Bucharest, presenting “Framing the General: Tojo Hideki on Japanese Screens and the Shifting Politics of Memory,” on how portrayals in film & TV reflect Japan’s debates over history and memory.

We were honoured to host Dr. Hiroshi Maruyama, founder of Centre for Environmental and Indigenous Policy Studies & Professor Emeritus, Muroran Institute of Technology. Yesterday, Dr. Maruyama shared powerful insights on Indigenous rights, decolonization & the role of research in advancing justice.

Our researcher Tadek Markiewicz recently took part in the British International Studies Association’s 50th Anniversary Conference in Belfast. He presented on “Global Vulnerabilities and Challenges to Orders” and convened two panels: “The Many Faces of Security” and “Cultures of Representation.”

Last week, the UHGS took part in #Almedalsveckan in Visby, as part of Uppsala University's program. Prof. Tomislav Dulić spoke on "The Gaza Genocide Case: Between International Law and Politics."

Yesterday, a few of us attended a fascinating seminar at the Swedish Holocaust Museum, where historian Wendy Lower spoke about her book "The Ravine: A Family, a Photograph, a Holocaust Massacre Revealed."
Great to connect with new and catch up with old colleagues in our field.

For yesterday's seminar we had the pleasure of hosting Tomas Sniegon, Lund University. He gave a thought-provoking talk titled "Dying in the Soviet Gulag for the Future Glory of Mother Russia? Making 'Patriotic' Sense of the Gulag in Present-Day Russia.", which was followed by a lively discussion.

At yesterday's department conference we had our own Kate Lonergan present her postdoctoral project titled "From Extraordinary Moments to Everyday Reconciliation". We are looking forward to the research results from this highly relevant and timely project, and to many more presentations like this.

Last week, Tomislav Dulić went to Paris to give a talk at the Centre des études ottomanes, balkaniques et centrasiatiques (@cetobac.bsky.social), which is part of @ehess.fr.
He talked about "What's in the G-word? Identity, politics, and the term genocide in Bosnia, Croatia & Serbia".

Last Thursday one of our postdoctoral researchers, Ivo Plsek, had the pleasure of giving a public lecture at the Technical Lyceum Stranice in his home country, the Czech Republic. His talk "Three Stories from Lidice" explored his ongoing research on this profound and tragic chapter of history.

Last Thursday, Kate Lonergan participated in the panel on women’s rights in South Asia at Lund University, which we previously announced. The discussion explored challenges and opportunities across the region, with Kate sharing insights from her research on everyday reconciliation in Sri Lanka.
