Southbound from Toolik Field Station yesterday, it started off great with amazing fall foliage. As we drove south the colours remained great but the streams started to get higher and running over the road at times. We made it to Coldfoot and we're stuck there for the night.
Made it home today :)

A lot going on in Alaska today.

Up at @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social we got a bit over 2.5 inches of snow.

Great day @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social. Not only is the lake officially ice free but I got to get out via helicopter to a thermokarst lake to the south of Toolik to work on an eddy covariance tower.
Pretty good day all in all.

I was curious about how much colder the temperatures this past week were compared to the 30 year average. Turns out it was cold!

Today was much warmer so hopefully the snow will continue to melt and summer will start.

Still skiing on June 8th here at @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social
The willows are starting to produce catkins and the lichens are vibrant.
Temps are expected to be above freezing this next week so we are hoping that more plants will start to flower.

After a great break in the warmth of Fairbanks I am back up @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social for a spell. With the clouds clearing and the recent snowfall the landscape is beautiful.

Good animal day @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social !
Caribou on the road due to soft snow led to great photo ops and filtering horned larks.

One word to describe today, windy.

As the morning light began to show the sky turned red. The old adage 'red sky at morning, sailors take warning' applied to us today here at @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social.
Winds sustained at 30 mph today with gusts at least 50 mph.

Annual dig a giant snow pit day up at @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social in the Imnaviat watershed. The snow pit is to allow snow melt (water) to run through a weir so we can calculate how much water and when it is flowing out of the watershed.

Well we are not quite as chilly as Fairbanks or Cold foot here at @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social but it is still -40 out so it is pretty darn cold.

Today I spotted a small flock of ptarmigan browsing in the willows around the station and basking in the sunlight.

Golden glow of the winter sun lighting up the landscape.

Back up @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social for the next couple of weeks.

Snow storm rolled in while we were out today making it an interesting commute home. Felt like a blend between flying through space and being out on the high seas during a storm.

Nice to be back up north for a bit.
