2/ Makukh, a former UPA fighter, spent years in Siberian camps.
Barred from returning home, he carried Ukraine’s pain until the end.
As he lay dying, a doctor said, “Your kids will be orphans.”
Makukh replied: “...Right now, we are all orphans. Ukraine is an orphan.”

His fearless reporting exposed corruption and helped shape independent Ukrainian media.

1/ On September 10, 1854, Ivan Tereshchenko was born, Ukrainian entrepreneur and philanthropist.
He funded Murashko’s drawing school, supported Kyiv schools, and with his family helped found the Kyiv Free Hospital for the poor - today’s OKHMATDYT, partly destroyed by russian shelling.

1/ On Sept 8–11, 1943, near the Zahoriv Monastery in Volyn, 44 young UPA soldiers resisted 1,500 German troops.

With only 1 mortar & 4 machine guns, they fought for 2.5 days against artillery, tanks & mortars, turning the monastery into a fortress.

1/ On September 8, 1514, near Orsha, the combined Polish-Lithuanian-Ruthenian army under Kniaz Kostiantyn Ostrozky dealt a crushing defeat to Muscovy’s forces.

Ostrozky used brilliant tactics: crossing the Dnipro overnight, feigned retreat, and devastating artillery fire that broke Muscovy’s lines.

1/ On August 28, 1974, the CPSU Central Committee and USSR Council of Ministers issued a resolution introducing universal passportization.

For the first time, collective farmers received passports, until then they were tied to their villages, unable to move freely.

1/ August 24, 1991, in the Verkhovna Rada, the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine was approved.

At 9 p.m., deputies carried a huge blue-and-yellow flag into the chamber. The hall rose and sang “Ukraine Has Not Yet Perished.”

1/ On August 22, 1992, the President of the UPR in exile Mykola Plavyuk resigned his powers, declaring independent Ukraine the legal successor of the Ukrainian People’s Republic.

After 72 years of exile, the government of the UPR fulfilled its 1919 resolution: the mission was accomplished.

1/4 On August 7, 1932, the USSR passed the “Five Ears of Grain” law.
Its purpose? To criminalize hunger.
Steal a handful of grain - get executed or sent to the gulag for 10 years.
Even starving children were punished.
This law helped trigger the Holodomor: a genocide by famine.

1/ On August 6, 1914, the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen (USS) were formed in Lviv, the first national Ukrainian military unit since Mazepa’s army was crushed at Poltava in 1709.

Formed at the start of WWI, the USS symbolized the revival of Ukrainian military tradition under Austrian rule.

1/ August 5, 1937 is the day the Great Terror began.

Order No. 00447 of the NKVD launched the bloodiest campaign of political repression in the USSR. Millions were targeted as “anti-Soviet elements,” and extrajudicial killings began on a mass scale.

2/ Some POWs tried to save each other. Many of the wounded could have survived, but russia deliberately stalled help to maximize death.

Even in captivity, Ukrainians held onto dignity and hope.

1/ On July 28, Ukraine remembers fallen soldiers, volunteers, and civilians tortured or killed in captivity.
One of the darkest crimes: the Olenivka terrorist attack on July 29, 2022, when russia murdered 53 Azovstal defenders and wounded over 130 more in a penal colony near Volnovakha.
