Seems like the obvious move is that they let the new maps stand on the shadow docket, rule in, like, June that the Texas map is an illegal racial gerrymander, but say it’s too late to switch so they’ll have to use the new map for 2026 only.

The county where I work south of Minneapolis has restored 150 acres of prairie to do the same.

As somebody who considers himself a pretty good bad-weather I driver, I still use winter tires because my car's handling sucks without them and I'll get stuck on moderate hills in snowy conditions. Likewise, I've watched F-150s fishtailing in the same conditions with RWD and all-seasons.

People don't want "density" for density's sake. They want the amenities that density brings: Walkability, entertainment, etc. Saying, "I want suburban-style housing in a walkable neighborhood filled with amenities," is not an incongruous statement, it's just impossible to create in practice.

This article does a great job of laying out all the reasons Dakota County is where it is right now. There are a bunch of factors all hitting at the same time. www.hastingsjournal.news/stories/dako...

That screenshot is from your data. If you click on the "Learn more about this data" link under the graph and "How is this data described its producer." It doesn't specifically state that its the US Census, but that's who produces this data for the US government.

Right, and World Bank sources its data from national statistics offices, like the US Census Bureau. They are using the US Census definition of "urban" for US data.

I think the thing people miss about walkable areas (which are nice) is that there is still a cost in time. I live in a reasonably walkable and transit-friendly area and last night I drove five blocks because I needed to pick up one thing and I wanted it to take 10 minutes and not 30 minutes.

The definition of "urban" here is any town with at least 2,000 house or at least 5,000 residents. It is not reflecting a suburban/urban difference. www.census.gov/programs-sur...

Norway and Scotland sending Denmark and Italy to the playoffs. Sweden losing four of six matches. This WCQ has been just the right amount of crazy.

I think it was the right call but, dude, at that point just keep two hands on it until you're back on the bench.

Frankenstein also doesn't use electricity to reanimate the creature. That was an invention of the films.

After watching the city council meetings dealing with this in Apple Valley, I get it.

Of course you do, you’re 12.

Also, you can absolutely repair modern shoes, it’s just not usually worth because they’re so cheap! Because labor is expensive now but things are cheap.

But this has always been the case in New York City. In fact, the homeownership rate in NYC is slightly up since 2011 at least. It’s a long-lived trope about how New Yorkers move out of the city once they have families and want to buy houses.

Today I learned that the official title of the Spanish Prime Minister is "President of the Government (Presidente del Gobierno de Espana." So, both.

I think there's a lot of people who believe Minneapolis is a pretty great city and only getting better and they (understandably) give Frey credit for that. Maybe they're ready for a little change (and ranked Davis or Hampton first), but they recoil at the idea that the city needs a complete overhaul

I looked at this a decade or so ago and something like 2/3 of the Kansas state legislators were lawyers, business owners/self-employed, or retired, because who else can be away from work for 5-6 months of the year for $22k?

I’m trying to make a joke about how donuts have no “ugh,” but I can’t make it work.
November 7, 2025 at 2:02 AM
Like, I get why people don’t like Frey; I didn’t rank him. But it doesn’t take a PhD in Calculus to figure out why people would vote for a relatively popular mayor running a successful, growing city for reasons that aren’t “racism” or “corruption.”
