YES! Please memorize the Official Mission Statement of the NIH:

“Its mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability”

TO SEEK FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE!
The substack states that NIH funds "clinical research." But it does not just fund clinical research. It also funds basic research which is foundational for clinical and applied research. Most breakthroughs in clinical research would not have happened without fundamental discovery driven science.
I wrote about the National Institutes of Health and the various serious and unserious proposals for NIH reform that have been floating around. It is important to understand how this agency actually functions and point criticism at the right problems. A short 🧵:

As news are going around that Musk will lead a "Department of Government Efficiency", here is a breakdown of the federal budget. Most of the spending is social security, medicare, dept service, and defense. There's not much efficiency to be had.
