We replicate with experiments: When prejudiced Whites are primed to think about population growth, their support rises for assuring Latina women---but not White women---have access to abortion, contraception, and sterilization.

Across large-N surveys and original data, we find:
➡️ Whites in places with more Latino growth are more supportive of legal abortion.
➡️ This effect is absent among non-Whites.
➡️ It’s driven exclusively by Whites higher in prejudice.

Most research on White backlash to demographic change focuses on immigration. But today, the U.S. is diversifying less through immigration and more through non-White births.

📢 New paper w @mfroman.bsky.social and Ben Newman: Why do some conservative White Americans support abortion? It's not gender or religion. They want to slow the growth of disliked out-groups. bit.ly/4mFYYXd

And are not nearly as strong in models predicting support for non-Trump Republicans

These associations are, as expected, strongest for those who pay a lot of attention to politics.

We find that they do. Here is predicted support for Trump across the range of imm policy atts for each group. While the associations are weakest among Black respondents, they are quite strong for Latino and AAPI respondents. Similar findings for the other constructs.

First, we find that conservative immigration policy attitudes, racial resentment, white ethnocentrism, and sexism are lower for non-white respondents, but not by much (especially for the latter two constructs). The question is whether they similarly correlate w Trump support

This is why we can’t have anything nice in LA. Can’t even take a lane of traffic to build a bike lane through cemeteries without heavy opposition.

Wait, how are people getting hundreds or thousands of new followers all of the sudden? I've gotten like 6 in the last week. How am I ever going to reach the masses needing to see the really important content that I post, like pictures of Lucy?

As we dig into the data on how different groups voted in 2024, we'll likely find that inflation / retrospective voting played a big role, but of course, as my work w Jess shows, there are lots of Black / Latino / AAPI folks who dislike immigrants and are high in prejudice and sexism bit.ly/40DGuzs

Extremely fortunate and grateful to be able to spend this semester at Berkeley as a Citrin Center Visiting Fellow. Views from my office aren’t so bad either.
