Numbers wizard for the Senate Budget Committee Democrats; tax nerd, budget wonk. Formerly at @BudgetHawks
As a reminder, there is a contingency fund available for paying SNAP benefits. Trump's "Government lawyers" thought he could use it during the first term shutdown and as recently as September.

Finally, the budget accidentally sets spending levels for the year *3031* instead of 2031. Maybe it's a typo, but it's one they made 32 separate times!

The House reconciliation bill is not fiscally responsible. When Republicans say "it has the most savings of any reconciliation bill ever," they are ignoring all the new spending and tax cuts.

Another example of the inefficiencies and red tape caused by DOGE. Rather than giving federal employees credit cards to buy pens and printer paper, DOGE wants another level of approvals. Then they sit on the request so the agency must sit idle

Punchbowl has a schedule for planned House reconciliation markups. Mark your calendars!

The House Budget doesn't have Senate reconciliation instructions. If the Senate passes it unchanged, there can be no FY25 reconciliation bill. www.politico.com/live-updates...

Elon is claiming that the payments Lutheran Services Florida are "illegal." Those payments are because the organization provides Head Start to children in the community. Does he want it to be illegal to send your child to pre-k?

Here's the funding it received: www.usaspending.gov/recipient/75...

Republicans are using crazy accounting to justify their deficit-financed tax cuts.

Try telling Netflix that you no longer need to pay because you used to subscribe and paid for several months so it should be free now.

If you're an awesome Comms Director, come work with me at the Senate Budget Committee as we explain to America that it's a bad idea to add $4.6 trillion of debt to give tax cuts to the wealthy.
January 15, 2025 at 12:08 AM
When Republicans are debating whether to pay for their tax cuts, they are debating whether the national debt should increase by 20% or 30% over the next decade.

Even without doing any other spending or tax cuts.

When Elon said it, he said they'll "take aim at" the list, which is not quite as strong as Vivek saying he would defund it. Let's just take aim at veterans and preschoolers and the Coast Guard

Vivek Ramaswamy, the co-Chair of DOGE, has called to defund the entire list. I don't think it's exaggeration to point out what's on the list. He wants to cut 1,200 programs. Some are "all Federal prisons" or "the entire Coast Guard."

Vivek Ramaswamy, the co-Chair of DOGE, says he wants to "de-fund" the entire list. What am I exaggerating?

DOGE did call for cutting $516 billion, which is everything on a particular CBO list. That list includes the entire VA, NIH, FBI, federal prisons, SEC, Coast Guard, and others.

Here's CBO's list. www.cbo.gov/publication/...

Here's DOGE's tweet pointing to it

DOGE's list that they want to cut is this CBO list. It's got the entire NIH, SEC, FBI, VA, Cost Guard, and more: www.cbo.gov/publication/...

And here's DOGE's tweet pointing to that list:

Don't believe me? Vivek said "$516 billion," so it's easy to find the list he's talking about. That's what I screenshotted above. VA is the single largest program.

The list: www.cbo.gov/publication/...

Vivek calling to defund the entire list:

Elon and Vivek's list of $500 billion+ cuts.
$120 billion - Veterans Affairs
$22 billion - Pell grants for 6 million college students
$12 billion - Head Start preschools
$11 billion - FBI
$10 billion - Coast Guard
$9 billion - more veterans' healthcare
$8 billion - all federal prisons
November 20, 2024 at 10:28 PM
Elon & Vivek say they would cut $500 billion that Congress never intended, but almost 25% of that total is veterans' health care.
They use the tiny examples, but they don't mention the big dollar ones.
November 20, 2024 at 10:28 PM
Trump's new "DOGE" co-chair wants to abolish all programs that Congress has voted to spend money on without a first vote that pre-approves the spending.

That would get rid of the ENTIRE Department of Veterans Affairs, the NIH, Pell grants, the FBI, all federal prisons, and more
