"... today the weapons in the brawling are not equal, ... it is now the custom in several Lands, ... where one has ... a short barreled weapon and rappier ... your grace, instead of the Dagger, take a short barreled weapon, and there it will be well revealed, what is the best thing to do, or not..."

Bauman Fechtbuch (Cod.I.6.4º.2, c.1400-1500)

A German #fencing #book that Mair collected, it is broken into 3 parts.

The first two date to 1420s, while the third is 1470s. It does not follow the Liechtenauer tradition, and its author is unknown.

It resides in Augsburg University #Library.

The style of Hungarian shield that is copied here
Gladiatoria (MS.Germ.Quart.16) Folio 55r.

Assumed created c.1440s, this MS is part of a larger group of German MS of the same name.

The core of the MS follows armoured fencing pieces following traditional judicial duels.

The play below is Messer and Hungarian Shield.

For those wondering:
Schermkunst (MS Fol.U.423.792)

Created 1595, this Dutch fencing manual has no author. It is currently in Newberry Library in Chicago, IL, US.

There are two Dussack and Shield illustrations, but I believe these are specifically "Hungarian Shields" by the shape and fencers' wear.

There is so many for them that I wish I could've added, but BlueSky only allows 4 photos.

Fighting the devil, hashtag just HEMA things.

Another contender is the "you seeing this?" face on the right person

Held almost* like a targe. Instead of it being strapped to your forearm, it is strapped to your lower bicep/tricep, immobilizing the elbow.

I am sure there are variations of it as well somewhere.

I have been informed by another fencer that the swords are not Dussacks but seem to be Talwars, which align with my theory that the shields are Hungarian Shields.
