Fun fact about these drawings, the foreground men are the beginning posture, while the background are the following movements you could do from said posture.

Paradoxes of Defence, 1599 - George Silver, Gentleman and Fencing Enthusiast

In Silver's work, he champions the English short sword over the foreign longsword and rapier. He suggests length does not equal defence, and to adopt the short sword back into society.

Thoughts on length = defence?

I've spoken about Mair before.

In looking back at his #collection, you can observe that one can defend themselves against almost any #weapon with almost any weapon, as long as you were skilled enough.

Very interesting is the double pages used to depict the length of some weapons and bouts.

Gregor Erhart - c.1468-1540
#German #Sculptor and #Illustrator

There are no records of Erhart participating in a #fencing guild, but he would illustrate his own Fechtbuch in 1533, showing works from Wilhalm, Lecküchner, Liechtenauer, and more. The book passed to Sollinger, then Mair.

Lecküchner, Master of #Messer #fencing

He discusses the importance of knowing your #art, "... if you know the art ... (But) you do not know when, (how, or against whom) you should perform ... (the art), your art is of no use for you." Understanding all elements of the art is critical.

Michael Hundt, 1600s #German #fencing master.

Hundt authored a 1611 Rapier treatise "A New Illustrated Fencing Manual on Rapier" which influenced two other fencing masters.

Interestingly, Hundt's final play and #illustration may be the earliest recorded "don't bring a knife to a gun fight."

Lienhart Sollinger - 1500s German knife smith

Sollinger was an avid collector of fencing manuals, potentially even a dealer, and was married to a woman who also fenced. He lived a parallel life to other masters, Mair noting him at events, donating a sword as a prize for a tournament in 1559.

Bauman Fechtbuch (Cod.I.6.4º.2, c.1400-1500)

A German #fencing #book that Mair collected, it is broken into 3 parts.

The first two date to 1420s, while the third is 1470s. It does not follow the Liechtenauer tradition, and its author is unknown.

It resides in Augsburg University #Library.

Augsburg Group is a series of #German #manuscripts dating c.1400-1500 from Augsburg, Germany.

Its only known confirmed author is Antonius Rast, who had left a partially completed fencing manual upon his death in 1549, which was picked up by Mair and influenced his writings.

Paulus Hector Mair was a German fencer, aristocrat, public servant, and thief.

His collecting and contribution to fencing is a little controversial, embezzling funds from city coffers to make ends meet from living a lavish lifestyle, but he brought us some absolutely meme worthy scripts.

My MAC Armoury #Hungarian #Shield came in!

Absolutely beautiful to wield the with Messer. That spike at the end really makes for some fun punch thrusts that weren't there before!

Some more historical examples of Hungarian Shields can be found on my profile.

Das Buch von Füßringen (The Book of Grappling on Foot) is a German #wrestling manual by an unknown author.

Created late 1400s, it first appears in the late 1490s in Landshuter Ringerbuch, printed by Hans Wurm.

As a Messer fan, wrestling has become important to study for good grapples.

Jörg Wilhalm (cgm3711, c.1523)

Wilhalm was a German Fencing Master and Hatter, and published works following the tradition of Liechtenauer.

More interesting to me is this particular work is fully illustrated and show a wide variety of garments people fenced in.

Schermkunst (MS Fol.U.423.792)

Created 1595, this Dutch fencing manual has no author. It is currently in Newberry Library in Chicago, IL, US.

There are two Dussack and Shield illustrations, but I believe these are specifically "Hungarian Shields" by the shape and fencers' wear.

German Fencing Master Jakob Sutor von Baden (the center person below)

An initiate of the tradition of Liechtenauer from the 1600s, he authored fencing manuals that clearly have relations with Meyer's manual (c.1570) and Hundt's 1611 treatise.

The illustrations are on woodblocks

Albrecht Dürers Fechtbuch (Sloane MS5229), ca.1512

A messer manuscript of Dürer's, it appears to be connected to his visit ca.1512 with Emperor Maximilian I.

Historians believe it is a unique fencing manuscript, but does seem to follow the tradition of Lecküchner.

A German origin fencing manual, it holds several different weapon systems and masters who stood in the tradition of Liechtenauer.
