So: is it alive? Or is it only pretending to be? In case of our robot guinea pigs, there's an easy answer - look what's inside! But with software, the answer might not be as easy.

We want to talk about machines pretending to be alive and how to deal with them, using a petting zoo of fluffy robots.

I went to our archives today, to talk about a project based on a historical event. This was lying randomly on the table: a newspaper from the day of the moon landing.

Normal stuff at ZKM.

Case in point.

So maybe there was some slight redecorating of my office going on today. Good thing we have so many pedestals in our attic. Next thing I need is a text label.

"Give me your fax machines, your modems, your huddled CD-ROMs yearning to breathe free".

Welcome to my office slash fax machine graveyard

Listening to the livestream of the Karlsruhe city magistrate. 80mio/year budget cuts are coming in 2026 and 2027.

Geez. Well... Ge'ez.

Preparing for another really nice project application.

We're also using machines to address ppl that are not comfortable with human interaction. Ours look like this:

I've since checked Geoff Lewis' X account that's been linked in the story (b/c in the story itself, Geoff's tie to ChatGPT usage is weak). But yeah, he definitely and very publicly went off the deep end with a chatbot.

Sure. Here's one. But what you actually want is videos - they do little "whee" sounds when shaken or spoken to. But bsky doesn't support native video I'm afraid.

I know they will. I might sing them the song of my (village) people.

Today, I'm asked to dress for a construction site visit and a prestigious exhibition opening, because one will happen straight after the other. Fun!

I've been spending the afternoon explaining The Mouse and its significance to all Germans under 50 to various confused ("I thought it was a large potato on legs") Brits

Eyebrows. I'm telling you.

I'm in love.

Meet my newest obsession: repurposed electronics by circuit-bending (didn't hack it, just plain old bought it). I love the glitch, crackle and shine of shorting the image sensor.

This is called "inaccessibility as a feature". It does not make your knowledge production more profound if you obfuscate it with artificial "complexity" (this list is meant as pointers on how to write artocles in the "Journal for Artistic Research")

I recently acquired a new hobby, and it's one I sadly can only enjoy passively: Circuitbending. Never in a million years I could do the fiddly soldering. But I can make nice pictures nonetheless.

Today I learned that the activist group that tried to bring community connectivity to Egypt during the Internet blackout in the Revolution in 2011 used faxes to do so. I feel oddly prepared. Thanks @fraubeckedahl.bsky.social for bringing this to my attention ^^

I looked one up in real life today. No bugs.

I angered the AI slop god. Now I'm in polar bear hell
May 3, 2025 at 11:15 AM
I haven't watched long enough to ascertain that. But they are certainly using a wide variety of measures.

I have no idea what I've done to deserve this, but "crawling bugs on polar bears" is the AI slop I'm getting nowadays.
