MEL vs Assessment of/for Learning: expertise in one does not necessarily mean expertise in another. The basic distinction I make is this: MEL is about a program or project, and Learning Assessment or Assessment of/for Learning is about the learner.

I’ve been thinking about assessments a lot these day. Are we really assessing if there is no feedback?

Specifically, online courses use various forms of assessments (I.e quizzes, essays, reflections, discussions posts, etc.). But if there is no feedback then what is the point?

Jobs for ##ID positions ask for “bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology or related field.” Yet most of these degrees (e.g. ID, LXD, LE, EdTech) are actually graduate/post graduate level. This mismatch has been around for years and needs correcting.

My reflection on Alan Cowell’s obituary of #Namibia’s President Sam Nujoma in the New York Times is that it serves as a modern-day example of the African proverb: “Until the lions have their own historians, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter."

Why do we still have university professors and lecturers that take pride in their tests being so difficult that students fail? A high rate of failure is nothing to celebrate! We should help students learn and achieve or help them identify their goals.

Whoever called the facebook @Meta decision to end their “fact-checking program and moving to a Community Notes model” a form of bending the knee & kissing the ring has a point.

Unless bound in authentic partnership and specific actions, land acknowledgments can be “an excuse for folks to feel good and move on with their lives” all while reinforcing “the myth of Native disappearance and irrelevance.

Visa rejections/delays are stalling Afrika's research, preventing Afrikan researchers from participating in crucial conferences & meetings. This denies them access to research partnerships & means Afrika’s needs are not represented. www.nature.com/articles/d44...
