Mechanical Engineer who knows too much EE (and now CS) for their own good.

I build robots.*

*robots may or may not be apocalyptic in nature
Considering they often already Have Ideas about who's already pre-ordained to lead their glorious new society, I keep arguing they keep reinventing Calvinism.

Oh I already spend far too much money on Bandcamp (lies. Can never spend too much on indie artists when you have the means).

I'm getting extremely annoyed that I pay and I'm still getting ads on Spotify. Their recent fuckery is reaching activation threshold to do something about it

Evolution in action. What do you mean we've become so efficient in this one narrow scenario that any deviation means we die immediately?

And there's A LOT less tech in reserve to backfill if something goes sideways.

It's the same upgrade boom-bust cycle the semiconductor industry runs on. It's just this time, consumers aren't seeing the upgrades.

It's also bad this time because COVID and the GPU thing disrupted that cycle last time. It's already unstable so swings like this are a lot worse.

Buddy, this would be a lot more credible if I didn't just look up that the exact model RAM I bought last year for $98 is currently going for $360.

Or remember fighting FOR Right to Repair laws.

And I work in tech. It's worse in a lot of ways.

(I don't know how interesting such an explainer would actually BE. Or exactly I should cover beyond "that's not how it works, you absolute walnuts")

One of these days I'm just going to have to write the explainer on how this all works. Because it is, at it's root, like the shortage 5 years ago during COVID just with one extra layer (the "AI" boom).

And it's all very clear if you understand how the industry works.

*twitches in mechanical-turned-manufacturing engineer*

Open-source CAD was a mistake, I see.
