Can you say more about the mechanism? I get that she's old and unwilling to learn anything new but the occupation was morally wrong when she was a kid, when she was middle aged and right now. So what about the fact that her belief formation happened half a century ago lead her and Biden astay?

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've been watching the UK degrade for the last decade and my sorrow has only been interrupted by the thought that perhaps they're not unique, just early, a harbinger.

I also heard positive things, but when I was in college studying electrical engineering and computer science, including a class on the physiology of nerve cells, I remember thinking how bizarre it was that ECT could work. It would be like if ER docs tried to treat frostbite with a blowtorch.

I totally buy this take. But I also wonder to what extent the rise of up-selling anywhere and everywhere has contributed. I think for some people, what other folks do plays a key role in their own self regulation. So having folks constantly hawking a 2000 calorie frappacino demands more self control

Even Reuters has to include these little deflections like 'eh our intel didn't say whether the human shields were civilians or POWs' but that doesn't matter at all! The law of armed conflict doesn't let you use POWs as human shields either!

One thing that's been bothering me about a life working in tech is how much the ethos of "tech always makes everything better" has seeped into society. As opposed to "tech has tradeoffs with the downsides often being harder to see at the time of purchase".

I'm sure you're right, but Obama's friendship with Rashid Khalidi and their years of deep discussion really should've counted for more. Imagine being friends with a scholar like that and yet still keeping normal dem Israel policy!?

She never had any counter arguments beyond "it is so complicated" but now I see how some of her anger was over a perceived loss of epistemic authority when I decided to go straight to the source.

Your comments here help explain something that had been puzzling me. I ended a friendship with an American Jewish woman over Gaza. She was outraged that I'd spend time reading Israeli media, using Google translate, looking into public opinion polls.
