My brain is tearing itself to pieces trying to disagree with you but...I think you're right.

Ah that's fascinating, thanks for explaining!

Can you say more about the mechanism? I get that she's old and unwilling to learn anything new but the occupation was morally wrong when she was a kid, when she was middle aged and right now. So what about the fact that her belief formation happened half a century ago lead her and Biden astay?

In every group chat, there's a range of derangement. What if you systematically delayed messages from the least deranged critiquing evolving consensus?

This is a good point. Now you've got me wondering about how much you could shift the conversational dynamic just by slightly delaying it occasionally dropping critical messages in elite group chats.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've been watching the UK degrade for the last decade and my sorrow has only been interrupted by the thought that perhaps they're not unique, just early, a harbinger.

I haven't read it but I can't wait to read it tonight!

It just seemed so physically implausible! We'll take this enormously complicated system and randomly pump orders of magnitude too much energy randomly through it and that'll make things better? What?!

I also heard positive things, but when I was in college studying electrical engineering and computer science, including a class on the physiology of nerve cells, I remember thinking how bizarre it was that ECT could work. It would be like if ER docs tried to treat frostbite with a blowtorch.

This story is mind boggling, thank you so much for sharing it!

than they used to have to exert and they feel that extra effort as a kind of loss compared to how they lived before.

I totally buy this take. But I also wonder to what extent the rise of up-selling anywhere and everywhere has contributed. I think for some people, what other folks do plays a key role in their own self regulation. So having folks constantly hawking a 2000 calorie frappacino demands more self control

condescending.

I've used this phrasing to say "I want you to demonstrate fluency in your programming language of choice", as in 'show me you know how to use vectors and hash tables and have done it enough that you have memorized the basic operations'. I was drawn to that phrasing because the truth sounds so...

I'm like this too and I'm also working on internalizing this wisdom. Tis a journey!

Even Reuters has to include these little deflections like 'eh our intel didn't say whether the human shields were civilians or POWs' but that doesn't matter at all! The law of armed conflict doesn't let you use POWs as human shields either!

Tis video unfortunately, but @somemorenews.bsky.social did a thorough exploration of this question and they found that while the stroke did change him, there were many red flags before he ever reached the Senate. youtu.be/28M_zkoAGQM

One thing that's been bothering me about a life working in tech is how much the ethos of "tech always makes everything better" has seeped into society. As opposed to "tech has tradeoffs with the downsides often being harder to see at the time of purchase".

I'm sure you're right, but Obama's friendship with Rashid Khalidi and their years of deep discussion really should've counted for more. Imagine being friends with a scholar like that and yet still keeping normal dem Israel policy!?

She never had any counter arguments beyond "it is so complicated" but now I see how some of her anger was over a perceived loss of epistemic authority when I decided to go straight to the source.

Your comments here help explain something that had been puzzling me. I ended a friendship with an American Jewish woman over Gaza. She was outraged that I'd spend time reading Israeli media, using Google translate, looking into public opinion polls.

Yay silks! I did silks and rope long ago and recently started flying trap.

That's cool, what kind of aerialist are you?

You're one of the most insightful writers on Palestine I've ever seen and I've read a fair bit in that area but certainly, we're all just people.
