Sounds like fun! All depends on what part of Germany you're going to. If it's a Großstadt, you'll probably be fine. But if it's a Kleinstadt or Dorf, you may want to come prepared.

The current invasion of politics into science puts us on a slippery slope that has a known outcome.
As bio major in 1980s USSR I trained with geneticists who barely survived Stalin's purges for their science.
I thus have 1 degree of separation from that outcome.

Reminds me of an informal lecture by NDGT about the impact of brain drains on an culture's capacity to sustain scientific discoveries. While I think most historians would call his take far too oversimplified, it does raise some really good points.

Really great intro to a highly underappreciated aspect of Russian history. Paper should have also mentioned that George Eliava, a pioneer in phage therapy was one of the targets of the great purge. Thankfully his work would live on and his institute in Tbilisi is still in operation.

I was also worried whether a critical mass of researchers would make the jump. So far, most of the previous academic communities I was following are here now, so remaining optimistic!
