Folks. My tour of #Ireland continues with wonder and amazement. Yesterday I hiked up Diamond Hill in #Connemara National Park. Jaw dropping. But you need to hike up and stand on the top to fully experience the majesty. #hiking

In my 4th city on my extended tour of #Ireland Don’t know about other Americans but the Irish seem to love them this one American, John F Kennedy. Parks, monuments, streets, mosaics, he’s everywhere. Whoever he is (or was)!

Inside the Tenement House Museum in #Glasgow Fascinating look at working class life at the turn of the 20th century. Also eerily like my grandparents house in an Appalachian town. Wallpaper, furniture, furnishings, fireplaces, so similar. It spooked me! #Scotland #Appalachia #TenementHouseMuseum
Closet bed. Literally a bed crammed in a closet rented out for extra income. Made illegal (to combat disease) but the lady who lived in this tenement house secretly kept hers. Parlor with chairs in front of fireplace, a dining table and chairs, a desk, and another table. Floral wallpaper and area rug. Window with drawn sheer curtains.

Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. Heard this all my life and even used it occasionally. I was today years old when I learned the story behind the phrase. #brassmonkey #Cork #Ireland

Attending my first #nerdxmas (also known as Great War Group Conference-2025) to learn, talk about, and generally immerse myself in all things #WW1 Informative, fun, perhaps slightly irreverent. All that and more. What a great conference and special people. GWG is a tremendous organization! #history
Acclaimed historian Nicolai giving a keynote address about the 1914 Battle of Galicia. Showing a map of the initial strategy of both Russia and Austria-Hungary. (It indicates a giant collision! And it was) Esteemed historian Alex giving a keynote address about Ferdinand Foch in the opening month of WW1 and his role at the First Battle of the Marne. (Also touched on his role during the Battle of the Frontiers) Museum Curator (and historian) Sam preparing to start a seminar about the initial British tank drivers and what happened to them at the battle of Flers. Historian Roy enlightening us in a seminar about the cost of WW1 in terms of actual cash and the things to wage war. Enormous costs but also the ramp up and phase down.

The famous #BerlinElk at the #NeuesMuseum Also called the #Hansaplatz Elk because they discovered it while digging the Berlin underground in 1956 in the Hansaplatz neighborhood. Literally just down the street from my apartment! I feel a connection! #history #archeology Cool! 🫎
Full skeleton of a Stone Age elk found while digging the Berlin Underground in 1956. Massive. Almost 3 meters long with 1.7 meters wide antlers. Lived about 11,000 years ago.

Visited the Neues Museum in #Berlin yesterday. Fascinating look at life in Egypt, Greece, Rome, and even Europe during the prehistory and early history periods. #NeuesMuseum #history #archeology
Bust of Nefertiti. Enclosed in glass sitting on a tall pedestal. Open Egyptian sarcophagus with skeletal remains. The famed Berlin Hold Hat. About a meter tall with gold leaf. Basically ceremonial, but a variety of symbols and equations down the outside provide astrological and calendrical information. Crown of Kerch. A gold diadem with inlaid garnet stones. Except for 2 greenish stones, supposedly eyes of a bird. 4th/5th century during the great migration. From the Black Sea area.

Biked to #Potsdam for years and this square was always under renovation. Now finished and I toured the phenomenal #Baberini #Museum yesterday. Fabulous exhibition on #Pissarro (Traveling to Denver and the DAM next! I’ve seen the attached painting on 2 continents now!) #art #Berlin #impressionism

Poster on the front of the Baberini Museum about the current (closing soon) exhibition on Pissarro, called, “The Honest Eye: Camille Pissarro’s Impressionism”. It includes picture of his painting of a young lady in a rural setting near a forest.
