Moderate Republicans run as Democrats because the GOP brand is toxic here, and officially the race is nonpartisan. Believe it or not, this happens in inverse in heavily Republican areas as well (or, it used to).

Fun wild fact is that Dems gained a voter registration advantage over Republicans in WV during FDR’s first term. They still had a ~200k voter registration advantage in WV in 2016, which they finally did lose in 2020 - after 84 years.

It’s Schumer’s job to keep the caucus together on major votes. This deal doesn’t happen unless he’s either supporting the negotiations or he’s unable to whip the votes (his own minority whip voted yes!!!)
