not an expert on humpback migration by any means but changing oceanographic conditions could cause changes in arrival times as well

agreed with the other reply, not uncommon! likely depends on the prey type they're feeding on or energetic demands of the mother. humpback whale distribution is driven by spatial and seasonal foraging opportunities; their distribution may reflect forage fish runs and zooplankton abundance.

I just read this over again, and I can't say thank you enough for writing this. I have ADHD and I'm a Marine Biology major and I relate so much to many of the experiences you've discussed. Great work!
