Yeah exactly, for cutting edge stuff they're not going to be that useful but >95% of work is not cutting edge for most people

This is just very strange coming from a tech policy guy - even more conservative software engineers are finding productive uses for LLMs. There are still regular debates on how best to use them and how to verify their output, but the question of whether they are useful is settled.

At a certain level of capability, we're just playing semantic games - if LLMs lack these things but are nonetheless very useful, perhaps these things are less important than you think

This is a funny one because modern linguists are basically in complete agreement that the strong form of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is wrong

Funnily enough Graeber is often cited as another example of the op, someone whose scholarship is deeply flawed but requires a fair amount of expertise to thoroughly debunk

Current theory going around on twitter is he's suffering from LLM psychosis

i would never, in a million years, have predicted that we'd crack natural language as a domain and people would mass-cargo-cult to the belief that "we have cracked natural language" was uninteresting

It doesn't seem like he's saying IQ is horseshit at all, quite the opposite (if IQ wasn't even worth studying it would undermine his point). Just that the genetic links that Murray thought we'd find haven't turned up

Would be interesting to see how they would react to military aid being conditioned, then!

As far as I can tell nobody has cared to challenge the record since he took it back in the late 2000s despite the massive Tetris boom since then

It's a very sweet story but because I'm a crank I get very annoyed at the "best Tetris player in the world" framing. She got a record in an extremely seldom-played version of the game and the guy she took it from got it back with over 5x her line count like a month later

hanania is very evil but he’s also smart enough to realize that if society collapses it collapses for everyone. a lot of the right are consumed with this magical idea that america can be turned into a violent hellscape of brutal extrajudicial punishment *but only for people they don’t like*

This neither answers the questions I asked nor is a useful comparison to a bunch of activists getting into a military installation

I think you are operating on a very different moral framework than I am if you think it should be illegal to verbally express support for any group, least of all one that did something as minor as "invading" a military base with no harm to humans. Should Hamas or the IDF be proscribed?
