This could constitute a novel tissue sparing mechanism that would minimise cell elimination in cases of maternal malnutrition or low protein diets. However, this protection would be at the expense of optimal tissue function, as it would allow the persistence of dysfunctional cells in the tissue.

As the key feature of loser cells is mitochondrial dysfunction, these results suggest that cell competition is eliminating these cells when amino acids are plentiful but sparing them in protein poor
environments.

The most interesting finding from the paper is that loser cell elimination can be prevented by decreasing the levels of extra-cellular L-proline.
