The Shadow of What Was Lost was an amazing series, great magic system with strict rules and very creative problem solving.

100% feel that. I'm a senior dev who is just pivoting into games so it's really spotty for me which type of advice to follow sometimes.

I think the scope creep advice is generally intended to be directed at newer developers so they don't get trapped in dev hell and never release. I think once you're confident in your team and abilities, you should be able to identify your scope relatively easily.

I used to make utility apps before I pivoted to games. What killed me about that was that users (obviously) primarily focused on utility, so if your app did less than another one, you were mostly just shit out of luck. Game dev is refreshing because of this 2 cake philosophy.

The rhetoric I often hear is "Nintendo developers are wonderful and fantastic, but Nintendo lawyers are the literal devil."

If you put a fairy-like deck into your game, I will play against that deck with the worst, clunkiest, timmiest deck imaginable endlessly until I have my vengeance.

Thank you! I'm trying to build a repository of useful little factory functions before I tackle making any real games, and this is a first step.

It was the one time I dipped my toe into Standard, and my poor little elemental combo deck got stifled, countered, and bitterblossomed into submission 😭
