In 1976, Marvel's Daredevil comic creators Marv Wolfman and John Buscema came up with a story in which the villain The Jester hijacked a supercomputer that could create fake moving images from copying old movies. He used it to create fake news.

50 years on, this is the real world:

The Jester laughs at how he is using this to frame Daredevil for murder. So apparently the waves hitting Hawai'i are not significant. More damage -not unsurprisingly- is reported in Kamchatka itself. But of course the BBC is reporting this (at least in headlines) as all about Hawai'i.

US-centric media bias has been endemic in the British media for years.

This is, as plain as day "Trade-Related Economic Coercion", as defined in a memo agreed by, among others, the USA and Canada:
We are particularly concerned with, and oppose, trade-related economic coercion that uses, or uses the threat of, measures affecting trade and investment in an abusive, arbitrary, or pretextual manner to pressure, induce or influence a foreign government into taking, or not taking, a decision or action in order to achieve a strategic political or policy objective, or prevent or interfere with the foreign government’s exercise of its legitimate sovereign rights or choices. This trade-related economic coercion is frequently disguised as a legitimate government regulatory or public policy measure unrelated to the strategic objective that it is intended to advance. It may also occur indirectly through government entrustment or direction given to state-owned, state-controlled, or private enterprises.

It's not that obscure surely? It has it's own Wikipedia entry and is often seen as symbolic of the descent towards Civil War.
The caning of Charles Sumner, or the Brooks–Sumner Affair, occurred on May 22, 1856, in the United States Senate chamber, when Representative Preston Brooks, a pro-slavery Democrat from South Carolina, used a walking cane to attack Senator Charles Sumner, an abolitionist Republican from Massachusetts. The attack was in retaliation for an invective-laden speech given by Sumner two days earlier in which he fiercely criticized slaveholders, including pro-slavery South Carolina Senator Andrew Butler, a relative of Brooks. The beating nearly killed Sumner and contributed significantly to the country's polarization over the issue of slavery. It has been considered symbolic of the "breakdown of reasoned discourse" and willingness to resort to violence that eventually led to the Civil War.

Yesterday lunchtime, I was so incensed at Zuck's announcement of the #DeathOfTruthOnMeta that I replied directly to his announcement. I did not rant, as you can see. Inevitably I got over 3,000 reactions and over 300 replies/mentions. But I have no intention of reading them, any more than Zuck has.
"Calling fact checkers biased... Facts are facts, but clearly some people want to create their own facts. Sadly, I must now consider what you platform now represents."

Came across this on a Facebook page for local rag listicle about stores and restaurants coming to my town. Comments like these popping up everywhere, reflecting (creating?) an atmosphere of personal antipathy towards Keir Starmer.
Facebook comments - contributor one (anonymised) "Don't we have enough McDonald's?". Contributor two (also anonymised, but with a Top Fan badge: "Starmer said porridge is bad for you. Macdonald's is health food I suppose."

The P added a sort of a long philosophical thing, then, making the point that the ordinary working guy makes up two-thirds of the people in this country who never went to college. In this period of our history, the leaders and the educated class are decadent. Whenever you ask for patriotic support, they all run away: the college types, the professors, the elite, etc. So he concludes the more a person is educated, he becomes brighter in the head and weaker in the spine. When you have to call on the nation to be strong on such things as drugs, crime, defense, our basic national position, the educated people and the leader class no longer has any character and you can’t count on them. We can only turn for support to the noneducated people. He says look at Meany, Fitzsimmons, and Brennan. They’re short-sighted, partisan, hate Nixon politically, but they represent the constituency of uneducated people which, plus the farm heartland, are all that’s left of the character of this nation. He’s concerned whether the country really has the character to do what really has to be done. He cited his meetings with the group of college presidents, the new managerial business class, the science advisory group, who have absolutely no character or guts. They’re all permissive, with no character. The nation’s editors and reporters have no spine or guts left, so where do you go? If you don’t communicate with the labor leaders, they can go to the masses, the rank and file of labor, and say we don’t care. So we’ve got to communicate with them. Plus they are men, not softies. So we have to find a way, intelligently, to fight them where they’re wrong. Go over their heads when it’s necessary, to their troops. He feels the country is in a great moral crisis, a crisis of character, and we won’t get leadership from our class. With just over a month to the UK election, polls are still solidly saying Keir Starmer will be PM. A few years ago I wrote a thread on the old bird site about how remarkable that would be. I dug out the notes.
TL;DR only 6 times since 1900 has a Leader of The Opposition become PM with a majority.

I'm currently reading Peter Longerich's biography of Joseph Goebbels. Much struck by this passage about an early meeting between him and press publishers. He wanted the press to be like a piano on which the new Nazi rulers could play.
Today Tory governments are the piano on which press barons play.
"On March 29 he held a reception for newspaper publishers and representatives of the German Press Association. In his address to them he declared that the press should 'not only inform but also instruct'. In particular, the 'explicitly nationalist press' should surely 'perceive that it was an ideal state of affairs' if 'the press ... Is like a piano in the hands of the government, on which the government can play.'"
