Cover crops have the potential to mitigate climate change by reducing negative impacts of agriculture on ecosystems. This study is first to quantify the net climate change mitigation impact of cover crops including land-use effects. A systematic literature and data review was conducted to identify major drivers for climate benefits and costs of cover crops in maize (Zea maize L.) production systems. The results indicate that cover crops lead to a net climate change mitigation impact (NCCMI) of 3.30 Mg CO2e ha-1 a-1. We created four scenarios with different impact weights of the drivers and all of them showing a positive NCCMI.

A team of scientists from A*STAR’s Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) and Bioinformatics Institute (BII) has developed a new AI software tool called “BANKSY” that automatically recognises the cell types present in a tissue, such as muscle cells, nerve cells and fat cells. Going a step beyond conventional AI tools which can group cells together into clusters if they contain similar molecules, BANKSY also considers how similar the cells' surroundings in the tissue are. With BANKSY, researchers would be able to improve their understanding of tissue processes in diverse diseases quicker and more accurately, which can support the development of more effective diagnostics and treatments for cancer, neurological disorders and other diseases. This breakthrough research was published in the article “BANKSY unifies cell typing and tissue domain segmentation for scalable spatial omics data analysis” in Nature Genetics on 27 February 2024.

However, comprehensive knowledge is lacking on how landscape context, spatial configuration and age of wildflower plantings, seasonality and flower composition affect pollinator communities, especially from East-Central Europe. To understand these effects, reasearchers of HUN-REN Centre for Ecological Research established diverse native wildflower plantings within heterogeneous and homogeneous agricultural landscapes. To assess pollinator insect abundance and diversity, we performed surveys on the wildflower plantings during two contrasting peak flowering periods of seasons: early summer (turn of May-June) and mid-summer (turn of July-August).

An example of this phenomenon is shown in the figure, where nongeometric local features prove inadequate for capturing the spatial proximity of the contacting appendages. By filtering out these types of features during the training and testing phases, better performance and more accurate alignment results can be achieved. The proposed SSGHM overcomes the enduring issue of feature ambiguity in dense-shape correspondence by harnessing the power of the Gromov–Hausdorff distance metric for 3D alignments. SSGHM identifies and selects the most informative features that lead to a more robust and accurate correspondence between shapes, enabling real-time confidence-based refinement and yielding state-of-the-art results that significantly enhance convergence times.
