There was a bit in the HL2: Episode One dev commentary where they talk about how each level is designed to tell the players what to look at, and that's pretty much the solution to "players getting lost." If you do a good job, people won't even notice it.

I don't think it falls apart, I just don't think it's groundbreaking or anything. The presentation and gameplay are the interesting parts.
