Yesterday, we recognized April 2025 as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Travis County. I'm grateful for all of our partners from around the county working to end child abuse. We strive to ensure families have what they need to thrive — when families have what they need, kids are safer.

Since Travis County launched the pilot six months ago, our Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program has treated over 350 victims of violence, including 15% related to gun violence. HVIPs help stop the cycle by supporting victims and preventing retaliatory violence.

This week the Commissioners Court celebrated Gideon Day, when 62 years ago the Supreme Court decided Gideon v. Wainwright. Though Texas &Travis County has still a long way to go, we're proud of the progress we've made. Thank you to all the county employees that make public defense possible.

Last week I attended the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference where we discussed the future of AI in county governments. There are many opportunities but we need to be aware of what it brings, both good and bad.
