Hyle, I will give a genuine call about this (who else is gonna appreciate the mole miner hats?), but several people have unironically asked for "my roommate" to call in again. Would I be allowed to email the call to you?

I understand why they weren't (and I'm okay with it), but if a Retro Studios game got a 2D challenge course in Bananza, I think a silhouette level would've been a perfect pick (like Sunset Shore from Returns). Sincerely hope this look (style?) continues to be referenced.
November 14, 2025 at 5:44 PM
One Kongversation co-host once said, rather infamously, that Retro's games didn't really have much (if anything) "worth referencing." I think the silhouette levels are definitely an example of that statement being ignorant; they're quite identifiable and look great to boot. It's a great look for DK!

Listen, if you're going to keep pushing your bad agenda of Candy cheating on DK with Funky (which I dislike), then let DK be with someone else😭 Poppy seemed to be flirting with DK a little bit, at any rate. LET DK BE IN A HAPPY RELATIONSHIP DAMN IT

This was challenging to narrow down, but I made an effort to include a good variety of picks as well. (I.e., some of my all-timers had to be cut.)

Me talking to Professor Chops, once he gets a statue added.

"Tune in for the 'DK Vine: Done Slow' playthrough of Donkey Kong Bananza's Emerald Rush mode—where I'll be constantly missing Void's quotas to discuss how the ripe Banandium veins *actually* tie into Barnacle Bear, Ted the Boat Builder, and Tiki Tong!"
November 7, 2025 at 5:00 PM
Reads first part: "Yeah, Hyle! It's a really great new mode that builds upon the base game, and smartly rewires your brain to play differ—"

Reads second part: "...okay, never mind..."💀

(But yeah, I love Emerald Rush. It not only allows for Void to shine even more, but the music is great, too!)

*Maybe* next year, but I don't know. I just think TOTK and especially Prime 4 bit Nintendo bad. (Not in a sales/reception way, but just them wanting to be more careful.)
November 5, 2025 at 4:16 PM
Most of these were solid, but as I said back then, the "Zelda tease" idea was way too soon of an idea. I understood the reasoning, Zelda gets teased early, but so soon after TOTK *and* how Nintendo seems more committed than ever to not tease long-term projects... yeah, it'll be a bit, methinks.

@justandre.bsky.social Do you want me to call or no? I'll be in the live chat for certain, but since I was going to call for both DLC Kongversations, I wasn't sure what you thought. I could also try and get my roommate to call, instead, if you'd prefer?
November 4, 2025 at 9:31 PM
Okay, but Bananza literally sees the characters going to an actual location that debuted in Super Mario Odyssey, and the connection between Odyssey and Bananza is rather clear (see the completion bonus images of Pauline).
November 4, 2025 at 8:08 PM
You're so "Mrs. (DK64) Tiny" and "Mrs. K. Rool" to me, that I forget that's your ranking. Would you say Tiny used to rank higher before post-DK64?

My top Kong though... hmm, well, can't go wrong with DK, but Cranky and especially Funky are great too. I also think I'd love Chunky (once I play DK64)!
November 4, 2025 at 6:57 PM
I just came to a horrifying realization... please don't tell me that "Odyssey being DKU" is my version of @freezer.bsky.social's "Rare cow makes a game DKU"😭💀
November 4, 2025 at 6:23 PM
Listen Hyle, the deal with the devil you made with Nintendo to get Donkey Kong on this pedestal again are as follows: 1) The "Yoshi/Toad-ificafion" of animal buddies 2) Bear Bear is codified as his own character in the canon 3) Super Mario Odyssey is DKU 4) Professor Chops becomes a mainstay pillar
November 4, 2025 at 6:04 PM
Okay, so Bear Bear it is, then!
November 4, 2025 at 5:47 PM
Cause, really, I doubt a casual onlooker cares about a Chunky statue with butterflies. That's for the "sickos!" It's just cool and special how targeted it feels. :-)

What's the one character statue you want to see the most, Hyle? Swanky, I'm guessing?
November 4, 2025 at 5:14 PM
What's so cool about the Enguarde statue, and now these, are how they feel deliberately targeted to Donkey Kong fans. Nintendo want hardcore fans to keep thinking about Bananza and Emerald Rush by providing these monthly challenges. It's small, but they go a long way!
November 4, 2025 at 5:12 PM
For someone who grew up with DK64, has been with Chunky since his debut, and has been around for the character's vast dormancy, I imagine you seeing a new 3D model of him in a new Donkey Kong game is extremely cathartic.
November 4, 2025 at 3:33 PM
... form with a character, then a wave of two with no Bananza form, and alternate like that? That'd be eight waves in my scenario, which doesn't feel *too* out there. Even if isn't alternating each time, I expect at least a couple more non-form waves.

I *do* anticipate Funky and Candy statues, fs.
November 4, 2025 at 8:41 AM
I was getting ready for bed, but now I have a spike of adrenaline between the Bananza sales and now this💀

But yeah, I'm unsure if there'll be an event for every Layer or not, but each Bananza form will for sure have an event, yeah. Not to get too ahead of myself, but maybe they'll do a Bananza ...
November 4, 2025 at 8:40 AM
I sort of noticed that too! Very cool detail for an inanimate statue. (Will you be looking at this image all night?)

What's also cool is how targeted these statues are to hardcore DK fans to keep them thinking of Bananza and Emerald Rush. The *sickos* want that Chunky and butterfly statue!
November 4, 2025 at 8:31 AM
Am I right in thinking Lanky joins alongside Cranky in not really receiving any changes since we last saw him? (At least not compared to the other Kongs shown in Bananza.)

And good point about Chunky! The way they handled his face makes him stand out from DK more. (Wonder how Tiny will look...)
November 4, 2025 at 8:19 AM
I noticed that detail as well! Very, very cool little thing they didn't have to add. Nice to see such a long dormant character (in the DK series itself) get this love. What do you think about the two design first impressions-wise?
