(One imagines a podcast studio attached to a well-appointed gym where a bunch of white guys are discussing “Abundance” over beta-alanine smoothies and doing pistol squats to the theme song from “Pod Save America.”) In “Notes on Being a Man,” Galloway—who has expressed bullishness on the Presidential prospects of both Newsom and Emanuel—declares that discontented members of Gen Z and the boys and teens of Gen Alpha need an “aspirational vision of masculinity,” a vision opposed to the misogynist messaging that’s epitomized by influencers such as Andrew Tate and Nick Fuentes. Part self-help memoir and part Dudes Rock polemic, the book presents a capital-letter credo: “Men Protect, Provide, and Procreate.” Masculinity can be expressed simply by “getting up at fucking six in the morning and going to work and doing shitty work such that you can protect your family economically,” Galloway once said. And the evolved man also insures that he does not slack off “domestically, emotionally, or logistically,” leaving his partner to ask, in Galloway’s signature demotic, “O.K., boss, what the fuck are you bringing to the table?”

It's awfully convenient for Leibovitz that "just asking questions" was perfectly acceptable when the questions were directed at groups he didn't belong to.
A masterful coalition-builder like the president will tell you that building a movement requires a compelling vision—in MAGA’s case, an unapologetic love of our great country. This vision has been a smashing success, because it’s what Americans want. The coalition fighting to reclaim America from the barbarians who currently control too many of our institutions is large and diverse, as it should be. But coalition-building requires boundary-drawing. The MAGA movement cannot ­tolerate—let alone promote—people who pretend they are “just asking questions” while undermining every single tenet of American greatness.

Great (if disturbing) piece. This really hits the nail on the head.
But I can’t get entirely behind the few-bad-apples theory. Nor can I so neatly separate the gooners as a whole from the rest of us. Think about it for a second: What are these gooners actually doing? Wasting hours each day consuming short-form video content. Chasing intensities of sensation across platforms. Parasocially fixating on microcelebrities who want their money. Broadcasting their love for those microcelebrities in public forums. Conducting bizarre self-experiments because someone on the internet told them to. In general, abjuring connective, other-directed pleasures for the comfort of staring at screens alone. Does any of this sound familiar? Do you maybe know some folks who get up to stuff like this? It’s true that gooners are masturbating while they engage in these behaviors. You could say that only makes them more honest.

How do you feel about becoming a political lightning rod? People occasionally just flip [me] off or whatever, but nobody's come up to me and tried to make a statement about anything. Personally, it's kind of dumb. It's just a vehicle. So it's ironic that it would even become a political statement, but nonetheless it is. [Editor’s note: Taylor was arrested and plead guilty to conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. He was later pardoned by President Trump.]
