Hi everyone. 👋🏼 I’m a software engineer (senior, I guess) and blerd (Black nerd) 🧑🏽‍💻. I primarily use social media to stay informed about trends in software development, politics, and entertainment news. I call Northern Virginia, United States home. (Yes, US politics is a bit of a mess right now.)
I can’t speak for other professions, but in software engineering expertise is key for effective use of LLMs. LLMs have certainly increased my productivity, but they’ve also produced some very bad responses to relatively straightforward topics that required my expertise to guild it back on track.
If you have zero education, but learn how to ask AI models the right questions , in many jobs you will be able to outperform someone with an advanced degree, but who is unwilling to use Large Language Models.

Just takes a smartphone, curiosity to experiment and a mindset to learn.

Taking a break from your social apps seems like a really healthy thing to do.

Hacker News even has a setting ("noprocrast") that lets you block yourself from using the site too much.

The legacy apps don't have this functionality because of their incentives (ads) but Bluesky apps could do it.

Jimmy Carter Appreciation 🧵:

As we mourn Carter's death, there will be lots of discussion of his presidency and his post-presidential exploits, including his work with @habitatforhumanity.bsky.social and the @cartercenter.bsky.social.

But I want to talk about Carter and the federal judiciary....

Claude is limited to writing code that runs in a single file, but I'm supposed to believe my job won't exist in 2 years.

I prefer Chicago style first and Detroit second. But if I had to base my decision solely on these pictures, I’m picking Detroit style.

In general:

1. Chicago
2. Detroit
3. New York

I can eat thin crust, but definitely not my preferred style.
You can only eat one for the rest of your life, which one you picking?

Senior software engineers are not paid to simply do what they are directed to do. They're paid to take it a step further—to assess and provide feedback on what they're directed to do. They're paid to be proactive in identifying challenges and helping to conceive solutions to those challenges.

I had no idea that Common dropped a new album this year, produced by Pete Rock. Yeah, Pete Rock still got it. 🔥🔥🔥

(I know what music I’ll be listening to while coding today. 🧑🏽‍💻)

Today, I was reminded once again that the biggest challenges organizations face are people problems, not technical problems.
Over the course of my career, the biggest challenges that I’ve seen organizations struggle with are people problems, not technical problems. Software problems are easier to solve than people problems.

I was introduced to functional programming by Dr. George Harrison as an undergraduate at Norfolk State University. Scheme, a Lisp dialect, was the language we used. Scheme also happened to be my introduction to dynamically typed programming languages.

I’ve spent the last couple of days assessing use of software testing over the course of my career. System testing has been effective at finding software defects. And unit testing has been effective at improving the quality of the design of code. (I’ve found more defects with system vs unit testing.)
