Taking my mid-life crisis one day at a time.

"Chuck Schumer rushed it to the floor" he says, even though Republicans control the chamber.

These people aren't even good at being evil.

Trump is always accusing others of the crimes he himself has committed.

Maybe Zohran Mamdani would move there too and defeat him in an election for a third time.

Not yet, but I am sure The Free Press is preparing the headline: "Democrats Sweep 2025--Here's Why That's Good for Republicans."

I await The Free Press headline, "Democrats Sweep 2025--Here's Why That's Good for Republicans."

My feeling is that NY Democrats are going to look different than VA Democrats, and that nobody should hyperventilate about either.
November 5, 2025 at 2:51 AM
I'm not a New Yorker so I haven't closely followed the race. Would be interested in your take on Mamdani and his apparent victory.

I don't know what exactly "centrist" means, but if NY Democrats wanted a centrist option, they could have nominated one who isn't saddled with a bunch of ethical problems. I'd rather have untried honesty than experienced corruption.

A shame it can come only from a conservative outlet.

The Great Recession was once such event. I don't think ANY Republican could have won in 2008 after that plus Iraq plus Hurricane Katrina.
November 1, 2025 at 1:24 AM
I think few elections turn on one issue, unless that issue is VERY big, like Iraq.

As Aragorn pointed out at the Council of Elrond, it was not just Gondor keeping the West safe. The rangers, working secretly and humbly, also kept evil at bay. So Elon needs to re-read his Tolkien.

Just because Mills is speaking in support of the filibuster now doesn't mean she couldn't vote against it later. Besides, her comment, “I would certainly want to retain the filibuster” was a bit hand-wavy--we all want things--and one she could easily abandon later.

Bernie Sanders is the Robert Bork of the left. His failure happened a long time ago, was largely his own fault, but will be forever waved by partisans as evidence of...something.
October 23, 2025 at 11:14 AM
Shouldn't you have blocked us all by now?
October 3, 2025 at 6:04 PM
Yes, this episode was indeed stupid, but at least it's not "Tuvix."
September 27, 2025 at 11:11 AM
I've never said how I felt on that issue, and it doesn't really relate to the point I was making. I am glad we can otherwise agree.
September 26, 2025 at 8:06 PM
What I think is that any Democrat who holds an unpopular position had better be ready to explain and defend it. But I've already said that and you don't seem to agree. So there it is.
September 26, 2025 at 7:52 PM
Those same generals are calling a man who has been impeached twice and felony-convicted 34 times the commander in chief. So, yes, I can imagine.
September 26, 2025 at 7:44 PM
We started this convo about Harris' unwillingness to defend an unpopular position, that's what it has to do with it. Those who buck public opinion had better be willing and able to explain why; otherwise, they lose. I don't know about you, but I don't want Democrats losing.
September 26, 2025 at 7:42 PM
It already has changed, for minors, in the form of Skrmetti. Reversing that means either changing SCOTUS or persuading 27 state legislatures to repeal their bans, and that's going to involve democracy...or "polling." No way around it.
September 26, 2025 at 7:27 PM
Legislation is enacted by officials who tend to do what they think their constituents want. Case law is established by judges appointed via the democratic process, and of course it changes. Dobbs, anyone?

Rights aren't divinely conceived. We decide what they are.
September 26, 2025 at 7:09 PM
We kinda do base rights on polling. Black Americans were not protected from employment discrimination until Congress *said* they were. Supreme Court rulings are made by justices who are appointed (loosely) via the democratic process. That's the way it works.
September 26, 2025 at 6:52 PM
Positions you won't defend or even explain will be defined by others, oftentimes bad actors.

No matter what those amendments say, Harris' position was pretty out of step with what most Americans were telling pollsters. That may not be radical to you, but it was radical to others.
September 26, 2025 at 6:43 PM
What I think is that, if a politician is going to take a unpopular opinion, she'd better be prepared to handle the questions that will naturally arise. I don't think Harris was.
