Or Ledas? “Grass Priests! Your face!” The real Polla snickered at me from around a mouthful of pie. “I’ll never get used to your face, you don’t look anything like me, it’s nuts—” “Pollie?” A jovial voice rang out from the direction of the Ottrava front door. Lilting and familiar as this kitchen table. “Honeylamb, we’re home!” Polla’s hand slammed down so hard on my free that I yelped as she rose to her feet. “Let me handle introductions,” she hissed. “Don’t say anything.” I nodded slowly. My thoughts were useless. How do you stop a god? How do you talk to your parents? How do you tell your own family they need to run, run now, get as far away from you as possible— “Pollie?” Ma’s voice again. Cheery. “You tripped the sensors! How many times do I have to tell you, security’s no good if you don’t switch Bolts back on to handle it?” “He’s on, Ma!” Polla lied. “Wait a sec! I’ll come to you!” She motioned, flashing the quick sign for ’stow it.’ I was too shocked to move, but I think she wanted me to hide. But I was frozen, trapped by those voices as much as my own shame. “Do they know who I am?” I whispered. “Do they know I’m—” “Me?” Polla shook her head. “No. Wade said not to tell anyone about Second.” I swallowed and grabbed a cotton cloth from the table, the one that’d been draped over the pie. Pulled it over my head, knotting it in a kerchief, to hide my topknot, pulling the front down over my eyes. “Okay. What if I keep my head down, maybe I’m selling—” Polla gave an incredulous snort. Idiot, her hand traced. “Don’t. Move.” Da’s normally jovial voice from the doorway had become a protective growl. I turned and two green laser sights half-blinded my eyes. “Get away from my daughter,” Ma growled, leveling her gun at me. “Kamen-lord scum,” added Da, aiming his rifle.
