Treasury is saying "woe is us" again and suggesting asset sales. So here's a reminder from the OECD that our Govt actually has a net worth ($191bn per Treasury) which makes us an outlier globally.

Been so busy sunrise chasing recently we didn't notice this Pohutukawa in bloom! Looks to be the first along King Edward Parade.

The 2024 Budget had 122 pages of all the cuts considered necessary to save the economy. One of those cuts (and an act of pettiness which got nowhere near the attention it should have) was the Prime Minister’s Vocational Excellence Award established by Jacinda.

I was gobsmacked when I saw that story. For context ACC's levy income was $6.681bn and its $50bn investments brought in another $4.35bn. $1.1m is literally three-fifths of bugger-all. The pettiness & short-sightedness are jaw-dropping.

In case you missed it here's me talking with Emile Donovan on RNZ Nights last night about Labour's capital gains tax announcement. Always nice to be in the studio rather than via Zoom, we had a rare old chat about it and tax in general.

Morena whanāu! For some reason, today's photo from the top of Maungauika reminds me of 'A House of Dynamite' (the most unsettling aspect of which is contemplating Trump et al facing that nightmare scenario).
Anyway, enjoy Labour Day and remember to thank Samuel Parnell. Kia pa to rā!

Here's an "interesting" coincidence. Two weeks ago the Herald on Sunday's BS
-filled letter of the week was from Bernard Walker of Mount Maunganui. And today it's Bernard again with another BS-riddled rant.
The Herald's stance is unsurprising, but you'd think it had a wider range of orrespondents

Too late for sunrise, but here's something very rare, Takapuna Grammar School's Octopule on the Waitemata with Takuranga (Mt Victoria) in the background. An Octopule is basically a double quad. So 8 pairs of oars to manage.
