Happy New Year! Thanks to BADCATBAD for answering my questions. It’s been fun hijacking with everyone and building this city of ours. Also, Australians, it’s your time to shine! The exhibition closes April 13, 2025, so go visit before it's too late! Please share clips/photos!

For Touhou fans, cosplay and hijacks are a way to patch discontent with the world of Gensokyo. And as seen here and with other examples I’ve covered, this has been quite successful. Like Cao Fei, Touhou fans have built their own ecosystems wherever they are around the world.

Cosplayers (2004) is also exhibited. In a 2008 interview, Cao Fei says that cosplayers “let the characters replace themselves in their everyday lives and routines...[reflecting] the younger generation’s discontent with their actual roles in real life.”

The project had a casting call for cosplayers. BADCATBAD applied with a photo of her Marisa cosplay and was accepted. This costume was hand-made out of cotton, making it very easy to wear and dance in.

Cao Fei is no stranger to working with cosplayers. One of her most notable pieces is her 2004 work “COSplayers,” showing young cosplayers in Guangzhou going about their days in various parts of the city.
