Happy late Cirno Day! Latest Hijack update: I’ll be investigating Cirno’s Perfect Math Class at Stanford and interviewing Chrysoberyl (@aniva.bsky.social) from Nor Cal Hakkero Factory No.1! While I take an inordinate amount of time to edit, preview the hijack here: web.stanford.edu/class/cs99/

Hi all! I'm still alive and will be hosting a Touhou hijack panel at @touhoufest.org! I'll be going into why Touhou hijacks keep happening and some of the cool things I've discovered over my years of researching hijacks. Hope to see you there!

Australians be aware - this exhibition is only open for a little while longer! Come find Marisa while you still can!
Thanks to @That_Paperbag for the photos.

For Touhou fans, cosplay and hijacks are a way to patch discontent with the world of Gensokyo. And as seen here and with other examples I’ve covered, this has been quite successful. Like Cao Fei, Touhou fans have built their own ecosystems wherever they are around the world.

Cosplayers (2004) is also exhibited. In a 2008 interview, Cao Fei says that cosplayers “let the characters replace themselves in their everyday lives and routines...[reflecting] the younger generation’s discontent with their actual roles in real life.”

The project had a casting call for cosplayers. BADCATBAD applied with a photo of her Marisa cosplay and was accepted. This costume was hand-made out of cotton, making it very easy to wear and dance in.

The Marisa cosplayer is Australian cosplayer BADCATBAD (www.instagram.com/badcatbad_/). She, along with cosplayers Spreekit as Seraphine (League of Legends) and taoruwu.cos as Ahri (League of Legends), were featured in the video, filmed at Million Life Sydney.

Cao Fei is no stranger to working with cosplayers. One of her most notable pieces is her 2004 work “COSplayers,” showing young cosplayers in Guangzhou going about their days in various parts of the city.

Although this is not Touhou, I am compelled to mention that a Cookie☆ video went up on September 3 at 4:30 PM. This one was sponsored by GospelBillie and is a cut version of a longer Cookie☆ animation (www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm4219...).

The earliest record of the site on the Internet Archive was in December 2022, but both it and Google Trends show a spike in July 2023. The site itself becoming viral let all four sponsors encounter it separate from each other.

Finally, u/yuyukosaigyouji2003, also unaware of previous Touhou videos (they learned about it from a Pikmin video), asked /r/2hujerk for Yuyuko videos to put on the billboard. A Yuyuko fumo spinning video was suggested and went up on July 19th at 12:31pm.

This was all under the impression of it being the first Touhou video on the sign. The only hitch was Kakkoi’s cigar. As cigars were banned from Times Square ads, it had to be replaced with a candy cane. The clip aired on the afternoon of July 15th.

In July 2022, @Kronington filmed himself in New York City in a Marisa cosplay for a Gensokyo Odyssey cutscene, but he found himself dissatisfied. In July 2023, he decided to contact the TSX-owned hotel for a one minute video of a Marisa cosplay clip and the game trailer.

The next video, a Yumemey Renko and Maribel video (youtu.be/m7cY9LmUo9A?...), was set up by @Zookie_Wookie. It went up on July 13rd at 8:31am. This was planned before the Ran fumo image even aired (July 8th) - Zookie had learned about the site from a CSGO crate opening video.
December 29, 2024 at 6:45 AM
The person behind the Ran fumo was hoping to meet new people through this. The hijack was done using the Take Over Times Square app (by TSX Entertainment - the site is since defunct) which offered 15 seconds on the Times Square screen for $40.

The very first was a Ran Yakumo fumo at 10:11 PM local time on July 11th. After being spotted by Touhou fans, the incident spread like wildfire across the Touhou community.
