One day we will criminalize domestic violence and rape; for now, these are de facto legal. That means that the home functions as a state of nature where the law does not reach, and the strong rule. Women need to be able to accrue money and the capacity for violence to withstand these conditions.

Like, if you're a Roman soldier in the 2nd/3rd century AD you are eating cheese daily. It's literally in your rations. And you're either making it, or helping the locals make it.
