I feel like it also relates to people being media illiterate too--they see something that they're taught to interpret a certain way, and then just ignore the context. It's like the same guessing thing based on the few things they recognize.

This makes me think of how so many people are trying to compare EM's nazi salute with left leaning politicians who are very clearly waving and not the same gesture,and when you put the nazi salute next to Hitler or proud boys they just dont get it.
