This has been tried in California and it’s bad. Like we just went through a pointless recall attempt a couple of years ago and it just wasted everyone’s time and money. It’s a dumb idea in practice and will just end up causing more problems.
My political hot take is that US voters should be able to recall elected representatives via petition - at any time.
No more hiding behind election terms.

People forget that the Federal Government is the largest employer in the US. An extended shutdown would have sent the US into a recession if not worse. The deal sucks for the most part but Federal Unions were getting worried and leaned on the Senate Dems to end it.
"A couple million people should just go without paychecks for however long it takes until either the Republican party decides it no longer hates the ACA or the 120th Congress is sworn" is not a viable or serious theory of victory, as more than a couple of us pointed out in Sept
Then why do the shutdown at all? What did it accomplish? The Democrats knew going into the shutdown that it would mean federal workers eat shit indefinitely - Republicans even cited it as a reason Democrats would break: and they were right!

I need everyone to take some time off of posting about senate elections because I saw posts saying the guy with a fucking Nazi skull would be a good senator. Are you fucking kidding me?

Anything about cutting Fed jobs(RIF) is sorta a null point not because the GOP will break the law or such, after this year and the massive job cuts + shutdown the Fed is no longer a place of stable employment. That will do the job for the admin wanted anyways.

He wouldn't have caved, he would have done a Regan and fire all the ATCs, only going further and privatizing the system.
I think after a bunch of flight cancellations at Thanksgiving Trump would have been willing to cave. Or the filibuster would have gotten eliminated. I don't think a 13 month shutdown was/is actually likely.

This would end up more or less crashing the global economy on par with the great depression if not worse.
It is always winnable as long as it continues! It could continue for another 365 days and it would be a win every single moment of that time!

Among talking about how watching Anime together and praising Avatar he also tells almost casually, the story of Cameron helping save his dad from kidnappers and almost going along with the rescue team…
Y'know, it makes perfect sense that Guillermo del Toro and James Cameron were roommates who introduced each other to Patlabor and Battle Angel Alita.

Every secondhand James Cameron story sounds like dialogue from 'ARCHER.'

"Awesome guy. We watched Anime together. Also, that time my dad was kidnapped? I called him, he sent me $1 Million and a negotiator. The Marines said he wanted to ride along for the extraction, too - that guy loves to party!"
Y'know, it makes perfect sense that Guillermo del Toro and James Cameron were roommates who introduced each other to Patlabor and Battle Angel Alita.

So if I’m reading this right, we’re going to have another potential shutdown in about 3 months?

Wait, the new Stranger Things has an ep directed by Frank Darabont???
Holy Shit.

Making federal government jobs untenable for a generation is probably a wanted side effect. Who would wanna work in a job that could be cut on a whim ?
Buddy if this goes into 2026 there isn’t gonna be a federal government left to reopen.
GOP SEN. JOHN KENNEDY: It may be 2026 when we'll come out of the shutdown.

REPORTERS: 😳

KENNEDY: I'm not kidding, you guys. I mean, you see what I see. Okay? This shutdown is going to last a long time. What's going to get us out of it?

Kinda think they believe a version of Murc's Law where they can pass the blame to the Dems because they spend too much time online/on twitter where everything is blamed on dems.
I genuinely can't think of a government that has gone "so here's the play, we starve are own people, so they'll get mad at our domestic political opponents and we can win this political fight"
November 8, 2025 at 8:05 AM
Ok so does anyone actually know how to negotiate anymore?
The entire game here is to make the Dems look like they are the reasonable ones who aren’t making your Thanksgiving flights get cancelled, think a couple levels deeper

Chess is a very good metaphor and more people including myself should learn it.
schumer offering up an extremely reasonable and popular compromise only for senate republicans to answer "eat shit" while johnson puts the house on paid vacation for another week while critical supports start failing and fed workers run out of reserves is politics. this is how politics work.
November 8, 2025 at 12:36 AM
Is this the reason for the MTG tour?
I can't tell if this is currently 1) unthinkable or 2) conventional wisdom but I kinda think Johnson is going to lose the Speakership when the House comes back in session

The next Dem president has to make a back room promise to send all annoying pundits to ambassadorships half way around the world.

The level of causal bigotry from all of the political spectrum on Twitter now is staggering. Like holy crap no one is immune to it.
It actually is mind blowing to check out X and see what is essentially 4chan which is also populated with politicians, media figures, "thought leaders" etc.

A dystopian horror, really. Where neo-Nazis now have equal standing with mainstream leaders. There is a reason Fuentes is now so mainstreamed.
The authoritarian takeover of X was a harbinger of the regime’s strategy for America at large.

Bluesky is a perfectly adequate refuge for X exiles. The biggest problem with Bluesky is that so many political and media elites are still on X. That’s not Bluesky’s fault—it reflects poorly on the elite.

Wait first woman governor in state history???
November 5, 2025 at 1:10 AM
From the same city too.
in retrospect both members of Dem leadership coming from a state where inner-party factionalism is dominant may have been a mistake
the divide between Martin and Jeffries/Schumer, Mamdani's fellow NY Dems, has been extremely noticeable. it's also a problem indicative of their fitness for leadership!

Everyone goes after the whole IP mess in the sequel rather than the more interesting angle of LeBron trying to beat Jordan’s legacy on and off sports.
you know, the original SPACE JAM was not some kind of masterpiece — it wasn’t even particularly good — but it feels like SEVEN SAMURAI compared to the sequel (watching it with my kids right now)

Everything is a backlash to 4th wave feminism being largely online and having more openly queer people be more visible.
thank you for all the support; the statement from our union is now live here with some more reporting.

now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.
November 4, 2025 at 12:25 AM
Everything really about this is a backlash against 2010's progressive culture and 4th Wave Feminism isn't ?
a lot to unpack here
