Code writer and web designer. I hack old games and rarely play them. I like dem colors.
Not sure if you're joking or not, but what I'm saying is that I shared the border with Marc so anyone can inject it into any ROM 😅

Yup, I’m still working on it. I’ve rebooted the project twice for a number of reasons, and of course I’ve prioritized other things (SML1&2, paid projects) over it, but it will eventually be finished.

Implementing it into something like RetroArch would be a great idea!

There's a funny use that occurred to me and I didn't mention as it sounds a bit bad — pirate sites turning the idea around and having a nice up-to-date web implementation (with your RomPatcher.js), just to patch ROMs on the fly 😄

In short, having an open, "standard" for repos of romhacks that include the bare minimum of metadata and version control has the potential to make downloading pre-patched ROMs a thing of the past.

Let me know if you think something like this would be interesting! (7/7)

We'd miss centralized features like ratings or download counters (or would we?), but a resilient, user-driven system anyone can implement would be worth it. Including checksums for source & target ROMs (plus revisions) would do wonders to prevent confusion and corruption. (6/7)

So what am I actually proposing? Repos, of course. Nothing too fancy — just think RSS feeds for romhacks. It has to be something very simple hack authors or maintainers can easily implement. Also, about the app: preloading it with RHDN's archive would be a killer feature. (5/7)

Of course, it should also let you browse hacks for games you don't own yet, as well as showing you some sort of warning if at this time you don't have the correct ROM revision. Updating and applying patches should be absolutely trivial here. (4/7)

How do we do better? Well, I think with a user-friendly app that scans your ROM folder and automatically shows you all compatible hacks. You'd see screenshots, videos, descriptions, creator info, and patch version details. Basically, a modern "app store" for romhacks. (3/7)

Many people just download pre-patched ROMs and, aside from legal issues, you'd be surprised how often they get outdated and even broken files.

In my experience, this discourages hack authors from releasing updates. So this shouldn't be the most convenient route for anyone. (2/7)

Interesting, that format makes a lot of sense and should be fairly easy to edit as well.
