My summer archives tour of alt-weekly literary journalism, aka immersion journalism, aka reported longform narrative, 1970s-2001, continues with this astonishment--14,000 unstoppable words from 1999 about brick scavengers by @torimarlan.bsky.social chicagoreader.com/news/brickya...

Reminder that words matter. You can’t “deport” a US citizen. You might be kidnapping, disappearing, exiling, expelling, illegally removing, etc., but you’re not “deporting” a US citizen.

No tsunami expected after this morning’s earthquake because the conditions aren’t right? Or because the Trump admin fired the NOAA staff whose job it is to warn us? Genuinely don’t know.

To understand what project 2025 really wants, it is worth understanding a little bit about the history of weather services in the US. Like a lot of US history, it runs through Detroit. 🧵
All of this matters because the current administration wants to privatize weather forecasting. This is likely going to cost lives in the US and abroad because we share weather data with countries that can't afford to produce their own.

Don't worry, China is moving to fill in that US sized gap

Prisoners are reporting physical and psychological effects from the heat. One cell gets so hot in an Alberta prison, the women there refer to it as "The Microwave." But a government policy prohibits the kind of relief they're seeking. My latest for @theijf.org theijf.org/canadian-pri...
Incarcerated people say they’re boiling inside Canadian prisons. They want relief
A government policy prevents prisoners from having regular access to air conditioning. With extreme heat events becoming more frequent, does that policy need to change?
