I definitely get the sense they have some passion for learning Japanese and simply aren't very good at learning it, which is fine. But it feels like the pro-AI crowd is prone to this kind of stubbornness and quick loyalty, and it's sort of interesting to me.

They also recommend consuming native media, asking "tutors" for help, and... asking ChatGPT questions. In a reply to someone asking for an alternative to Duolingo, they answered... "Duolingo". Some weird tribalism or something going on here, and I wonder if it's partly because Duolingo uses AI.

The conversation is very short. The most advanced sentence typed was 日本語とアニメがすきです. They typed ナイジェリア as ないじりや. 日本語 is the only kanji. Everything in the image can be learned in a week or two. They've been learning Japanese on Duolingo since July 2023.

Day 3: the idea is evolving

Really, I think the best thing is to commit to any method without concerning yourself with whether it's "perfect". Learning Japanese imperfectly is still valuable progress. Much better than obsessing over what's perfect and ending up doing nothing.
